Later on, showered and dressed in shorts and a T-shirt, I sit beside Teo in the Jeep as it barrels along the road. I feel sleek and like every atom in my body is buzzing.
âWhere are we going?â I ask again.
He grins at me, his teeth white in his tanned face and the sun glancing off his sunglasses. âWeâre going to Cala dâOr.â
Excitement stirs. âOoh, are we going out on the boat again?â
He shakes his head regretfully. âNo. We donât have time, Wren. A friend closed the boat down for me for the winter as Iâm leaving. Our flight is at three.â
I bite my lip. âI canât wait to see Venice, but Iâm a bit sad to leave Majorca.â
âMe too.â He reaches over and squeezes my hand. âBut youâll love Venice. I promise.â
âWhatâs it like?â
âIt will appeal to your dramatic little heart.â He chuckles as I pinch his fingers. âIt is beautiful and melancholy and full of a sense of its place in history.â
âVery different from here.â
âHere is bold and bright.â
âSo why are we going to Cala dâOr?â
âWeâre going to a little shop that I know. Youâll love it.â
âWill I? Iâm not a huge shopper, Teo.â
âDo you not like it?â he asks with concern.
âI don't know. Iâve not had much reason to shop in the past, unless you count Sainsbury's and charity shops.â
âWell, youâll like this place. Itâs a lot better than Sainsbury's.â
I wonder what heâs buying for himself and then dismiss the thought. Weâve got the whole day together. I donât care what heâs shopping for.
âYou know Sainsbury's?â I ask.
He chuckles. âOf course. I went to university in Durham.â
âReally? What did you take? Was university nice?â I stop talking, feeling my cheeks warm. âSorry,â I mutter. âI just have so many questions, Teo.â
He chuckles. âAsk me anything you want. Let me see if I remember all that long list.â He laughs as I pinch him. âYes, the university was nice. Durham is a beautiful city. I took Business Administration, but I think I really excelled in drinking in the university bar.â
âWell, that answers something Iâve been thinking for ages.â He looks at me enquiringly. âYour English is very good, but itâs more the fact that you understand little cultural references to do with British TV and such. Iâve wondered where it came from.â
âI came back with that and some excellent friends. Youâll like them.â
âIâll meet them?â I canât help my surprise.
âYes,â he says, looking at me cautiously. âOf course you will, if they visit. Youâll certainly meet my Venetian friends. Do you not want to?â
âOh no. Itâs not that at all,â I say immediately, and his shoulders relax. âI suppose I just thought Iâd be kept separate from your real life.â
âMy real life is going on right now,â he says evenly. âAnd I think theyâll like you.â
âDo they meet your usual men?â I ask.
âOf course.â For some reason, that depresses me. For a wild second, Iâd thought he was stepping outside his standard rules for me. I shake myself and turn to the stereo.
