The roar of the falls was deafening. Georgia leaned against the railing of the footbridge for a long time, staring at the hypnotic wall of water. But instead of quieting her mind, the sounds only amplified the inner voices in her head. The day’s earlier conversation would not go away.

It had culminated with Sam’s boss, that bitch Katherine Vance, blackmailing her. “Ms. Steele, we have an agreement then? You are not to discuss the circumstances of Anderson’s death, his little Honduras research project, or any ties the two might have into a fictional, secret organization known as the Guardians.” She laughed. “I can’t believe I’m even saying that. It sounds like a Bond movie. An old Bond movie.”

“If it doesn’t exist, then why do you care if I talk about it?”

“And in return, we will not press charges against you. You can return to your life in Atlanta as if nothing happened. You are lucky, Ms. Steele, that Agent Kelly likes you.”

“He needs me.”

“I assure you, he could get what he needed, and we could still put you away for a long time. But you know what he doesn’t need? Your accomplices.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Marcus West, David Cohen, Patricia Erickson, and Diane Erickson.”

“They have nothing to do with this.” Georgia had been both surprised and horrified at the mention of the names.

“Oh, but they might. Marcus has some questionable accounting practices that could be very injurious to his business, and David, well, you never know what inappropriate things you might find on a university laptop. Pornography, for example.”

“He would never—” and then the realization hit. “You bitch.”

“I’ve been called worse.” Katherine Vance leaned back in her chair and smiled, a cat-that-ate-the-canary smile. “So, we have an agreement, then?”
