We, a nosey bunch, poke

around in everyone’s business

even our own, discontent

to leave well enough

alone, we probe like a surgeon,

speak behind a white mask,

discover the disease,

turn it into the perfect scar

tissue, a thin membrane, holds

us together, taut, as we write

holding our breath, pushing

beyond what the heart taught
