THE TRAIL

As with many of the trails at Mount Rainier National Park in summer, the earlier you start hiking, the more likely you’ll find a parking spot at the trailhead and less human company on the trail. Begin with a no-nonsense climb into dense forest up a rock-walled trail to a viewpoint where Van Trump Creek flies over a cliff to form Christine Falls—a better view than from the auto bridge below. Beyond, the trail climbs to a bridge across the creek, 0.3 mile from the trailhead, then turns up the valley to climb at a more gradual pace above the creek.
