Chapter 12

Logan

* * *

Logan scrambled away from Frankie as she did the same.

He cut a glare to Chance, who shrugged nonchalantly.

“Don’t shoot the messenger.”

“Couldn’t you have told Garrett that we weren’t here?” Logan growled. His brother didn’t need to tell Logan what he’d already figured out. Their spot by the tree was clearly visible from the ranch and his brother had sold him out to Garrett.

Chance flung a scandalized hand to his chest.

“You expect me to lie to my own flesh and blood? Me? No, I couldn’t find it in my heart to do so.”

“You had no problems doing it when you were running off to visit Mary, or whatever your girl of the week was called.”

The flashing in Chance’s eyes changed.

“Listen, you’re just lucky we ran out here to warn you instead of letting Elmer find ya’ll in whatever state–”

“Guys,” Chase interjected.

“We aren’t hurting anyone,” Logan said. “We’re barely even touching.”

Chance’s lashes flickered.

“Yeah, but we both know Elmer wouldn’t see it that way.”

“Guys,” Chase growled with more insistence.

“Oh, whatever to Uncle Elmer,” Frankie declared. “He’s not my boss. Forget about him.”

Chance regarded Frankie approvingly, a smile curling up the corners of his lips as his gaze flicked back to Logan.

“Well, well, well, brother. She’s a real spitfire, that one. I can see what you see in her.” He winked back at her. “If you get bored of my brother, there’s other Thatchers who’d love a chance, too.”

Logan saw red. For a second, he had flash after flash, Chance with one giggly adoring girlfriend after another, girls in school who’d never talked to Logan, pulling him aside begging for favor with his charming, charismatic brother. It was always Chance.

Chance and Frankie? Over my dead body.

“Don’t you talk to her,” Logan hissed with more malice than he thought he possessed.

Chance’s hands flew up, eyes widening with amused surprise.

“Whoa there, lover boy!”

“Guys!” Chase was practically yelling now. “He’s close.”

“I don’t care,” Frankie snapped. “Let him come. I’m not going home with him and that’s final.”

“And you lay off,” Logan spat at Chance. “Just this once, for this one time, could you not…”

He trailed off, surprised at himself to hear the venom in his voice. The twins were too, their eyes an identical huge size.

He’d never spoken to Chance or any of the brothers like that before. For years, he’d just borne the brunt of their snide jabs and ‘joking’ with silence, not wanting to get into it, not wanting to bother.

Maybe that’s because I’ve never had anything to protect before.

“You think you’re such a hotshot?” Chance had an ugly look on his face as he stabbed a finger back at the pens. “Why not Superman over there and take a ride on Joan?”

There was silence as Logan thought it over. He could feel Frankie’s eyes on him as he mulled over the thought.

“Don’t,” Chase said quickly, elbowing Chance as he realized that Logan was thinking about it. “Ignore this joker. You know what Joan’s like.”

Logan did, all too well. The new horse Chance had bought on a whim and against their mother’s advice, was wild.
