Chapter 14

Jenna

Standing in the pen working with Dolly, my mind keeps drifting back to this last week with Josh. Ever since he decided to drop the walls between us and see where things go, things have just been nothing short of electric between us.

He treats me like I'm the most important thing in the world, and we have spent every possible moment together. The longest we are parted is when I'm at work or when I go home for Sunday dinner. Josh skipped dinner this week so we wouldn't slip and tell my family about us before we were ready.

That didn't stop Mom, Dad, and my brother from mentioning how much time I was spending at his ranch and asking about Josh. Casually, I steered the topic to myself with Dolly and all the horse training I've been learning. But truth be told, my heart skips a beat every time I think about Josh.

Now, as I continue to work with Dolly, the warmth of the Texas sun kisses my skin, and I let my mind wander to the possibilities that lie ahead for Josh and me. I try not to think about how soon we will have to tell people about us. Starting with my family.

I know we are in our own little bubble here, but I love it and don't want things to change.

Lost in my thoughts, I'm startled when Josh sneaks up behind me and wraps his strong arms around my waist. His touch sends shivers down my spine, and I turn to face him with flushed cheeks.

"Hey there, cowgirl," he says with a playful smirk. "You've been daydreaming again?"

Josh has caught me many times lost in my own head, thinking about him or my book. He doesn't make me feel bad about it, just smiles and kisses me. When I asked him about it one night, he said he's glad I feel safe enough around him to drift off like that. I hadn't thought of it that way, but he does make me feel safe.

"Well, look, there is Phantom. I haven't seen him here on the ranch in over a year," Josh says.

I look up, and sure enough, there he is, walking toward us from the side of the barn. "Maybe word got out that you have a new lady here, and he has come to check her out and do some flirting," I joke.

Phantom is the town horse. No one knows where he came from, but we all watch out for him and feed him, and he makes his way around the ranches and even down to the diner in town. His all-black coat glistens in the sun as he walks over to the ring and pauses, watching Dolly intently.

Josh pulls me back out of their way, and Dolly stays on the other side of the pen watching Phantom. I can feel the tension in the air as Phantom and Dolly lock eyes. It's as if time stands still. I’m riveted, standing there, captivated by their interaction.
