Chapter 29

“We’ll have to cancel our plans to work this weekend,” Evan said. “I’d completely forgotten I’m meant to be going to a wedding. It’s my girlfriend’s brother. There’s no way I can get out of going.”

“No, of course not. You go and enjoy yourself. I’ll get more work done on my own, anyway.” Clarke had already cancelled her weekend plans when Evan asked her to work. She may as well come in. Otherwise, she’d only be sitting at home on her own.

“No,” Evan said firmly. “You can’t go in alone at the weekend, Clarke.”

“Of course I can. If I get stuck on anything, I’ll go home early.”

Evan snapped the lid of his laptop shut. “No, I mean, it’s too dangerous. Someone’s just been murdered here. I don’t want you to be the next victim.”

“But Henry really wanted us to snoop around at the weekend while the building’s empty.”

“Well, it will have to wait until next weekend. I’m not putting you at risk.”

“I’ll be careful.” Clarke didn’t need Evan to look after her. She’d be perfectly ok on her own.

“No. Absolutely no. Ten times no. I’ve already had your other half on the phone worried about you.”

“What? Paul phoned you?”

“Calm down. He only wanted to find out what we were working on, in case it might be relevant to his investigation.”

“Then why the hell didn’t he ask me?” She’d already discussed with Paul what they were doing at Carjon. Why would he go behind her back to talk to Evan as well? She took a deep breath. She admonished herself for becoming paranoid. Of course Paul would want to talk to Evan. He was in charge of the job they were doing. “Sorry,” she said. “I didn’t mean to bite your head off. I’m being stupid.”

“Yes,” Evan said. “Anyway, if you must know, he didn’t want to discuss things with you because he’s worried that you’ll get too involved and put yourself in danger, which is fair enough, considering there’s a murderer still on the loose.”

“That’s not fair,” Clarke said. “I wouldn’t do anything stupid. He can’t tell me what to do.”

“Maybe not, but while we’re working here, I can. And I don’t want you coming in tomorrow when the building’s empty.”

“I’m still going to kill him,” Clarke said, angry with Paul for discussing her like that with her boss.

“Can you just forget I told you all that? Paul asked me not to tell you.”

“He shouldn’t interfere.”

“He’s worried about you. He doesn’t want you to get hurt. I’m guessing because he loves you.”

Clarke stayed silent for a moment. Evan was right. And she should be more grateful that Paul did actually care about her.

“Ok. I won’t mention it to Paul.” She’d have calmed down by the time she saw him next, anyway.

“And you won’t come into the office tomorrow.”

Clarke shook her head. If she didn’t actually voice the words, it wasn’t really a lie.

Clarke got up and walked over to the window, still annoyed that both Evan and Paul assumed she needed babysitting.
