Childhood was brief, however, and most peasant children had few, if any, toys. They used their imaginations and whatever was available, such as flowers, sticks, bits of wood, pieces of cloth, and the like. For example, a medieval sermon describes a child making a “sailing ship” out of a crust of bread and building a “great hall” with pieces of wood. A cloth decorated with flowers could be a lovely lady, and a long stick made a fine white horse.

As soon as they were old enough, children began to work, helping with their parents’ daily tasks. By the age of twelve, they were doing adult work, even plowing. They labored not only on the family’s land but also, if they were serfs, on the demesne. (If the mother was a serf, the child automatically became a serf, too.)
