Walking into Kyler’s house made me realize…I didn’t know the man at all. It was nothing like where we’d lived before.

The places my mother had lived in had been warm, even though we moved often. This place was cold. The house itself wasn’t as large as I’d have expected, but it was modern. It appeared to have two stories and large windows on the ground floor. A gate at the driveway and mature trees afforded privacy, and the intercom outside the gate meant people couldn’t get access without someone buzzing them in.

Dane drove, having come over with his own vehicle to relieve Bray. I would have rather driven myself, but Dane had reminded me that his car was better protected. He wasn’t wrong, even if I didn’t love the idea of being trapped. Having him drive meant I couldn’t leave when I wanted, that losing him would be exceedingly more difficult.

However, I couldn’t exactly say that, which meant I ended up in the passenger seat of his king cab truck while he maneuvered the vehicle up the winding driveway of Kyler’s house.

“Not many people come here,” Dane said as he put it in park.

“Well, I didn’t ask.”

Instead, Kyler had called me, inviting me in a way that couldn’t be rejected. At least, not if I wanted to keep breathing.

Then again, the closer I got to him, the more information I could gather and the better my plans would be. If I could get him to let down his guard, then he might just let slip where Kenz was.

Still, the house seemed cold, and our places growing up hadn’t. Was it because my mother had decorated all those places? Because Kyler, despite being who I thought was my father, hadn’t really been a part of my life in the same way?

He’d always been on the outside, someone who appeared from time to time but didn’t interact much. He sure as hell hadn’t been the type to have movie nights or drive me to school. I’d see him at the house, and at parties where we had to attend, but not much else. At most, he’d been adjacent to the family unit. It was strange to realize I knew so little about a man who had been my father.

We got out of the truck, and I prepared myself to see Kyler. It always took a moment to school my expression and hide my revulsion upon seeing him.

“Nervous?” Dane asked.

“It’s a short walk from friend to foe in this world,” I reminded him. “Anyone with brains is cautious.”

He inclined his head as if he couldn’t argue against the point. The reality was that most people were killed by someone they’d known, someone who could get to them. It meant that even if Kyler was suddenly all ready to protect me, he could just as easily change his mind and decide to kill me for his own benefit, for imagined slights or for nothing at all.

Dane knocked on the front door, despite Kyler’s assistant already having buzzed us in from the gate.
