Creating Boards with a Narrow Focus
As far as anyone can tell right now, the number of boards a user has doesnât seem to affect whether or not she is followed or her boards show up more prominently in search results. And as long as this trend continues, we say the more the merrier! Why not curate everything you love? As long as itâs brand appropriate, that is. The one thing thatâs clear about boards is that the most effective and admired boards are narrow in focus. They have a clear direction and revolve around a very specific topic.
When you create boards that are narrow in focus, chances are youâll catch the attention of others who share in specific interest because these types of boards seem to resonate deeper with them. After all, as Pinterest users, we would all prefer to spend our time on the site looking at products and pictures that will enhance not only our user experience, but also our lives.
Just in case you arenât clear on what a narrow-focus board is, letâs look at an example. A âMidcentury Furnitureâ board is a much more targeted board than one called simply âFurniture.â Furniture is such a broad category, users who are looking to find midcentury furniture might skip right over it, or they might not find it at all, even if youâre pinning a lot of midcentury furniture. Be sure the boards you create have a clear and specific topic. And be sure you title your boards accordingly.
One of Christineâs most successful Pinterest boards is her âWords to Live Byâ board. On this board, she pins some of her favorite inspirational quotes she aspires to live her life by. Most users seem to find these quotes encouraging and uplifting. âWords to Live Byâ is a great example of a narrow-focus board because the content pinned on this board is very specific and doesnât deviate from the topic at hand. Pinterest users searching for inspirational quotes can find hundreds of them on Christineâs focused âWords to Live Byâ board.
