Ecaterina Teodoroiu

Born in a small village called Vădeni, young Ecaterina would have never guessed where life would lead her. Her fate would be far from what she dreamed. After four years of school, she moved on to a girl's school in Bucharest, where she studied to be a teacher. But in 1916, the Kingdom of Romania joined the war, and her destiny was written in stone. Course-correcting her life, she moved from preparing to become a teacher to serving her country, and that change in the path would leave her one of the greatest Romanian heroes of the war.

Over the years, Ecaterina had worked as both a scout and a nurse, and wanting to contribute to the effort, chose to use this experience on the front lines. The devoted patriot worked along with reserves forces and civilians at the Jiu River. Banding together, the Romanian troops stationed with her were able to hold the advancing German forces back. Charged with caring for the fallen soldiers, Ecaterina soon developed a respect for the level of patriotism that even the wounded had, and this patriotism was contagious. Tragedy would strike again, and fate would urge Ecaterina to course-correct. Word that her brother had fallen on the front line reached her, and this stirred the fire inside Ecaterina. The Romanian nurse chose a bold move for a woman at this time; she requested to be a front-line soldier. With reluctance, she was granted her wish and moved to the front to serve with the 18th Infantry Regiment.

Ecaterina was a smart woman, and because of this, she adapted to the strategic thinking of military life easily and quickly. This adaptability led her to assist in planning and to make some quick decisions when faced with difficult situations. For instance, at one point, her unit, surrounded by German soldiers, was in danger of being captured. With a quick wit and a masterful plan, she was able to fool the Germans and keep her comrades from being taken as prisoners.

Unfortunately, eventually, her smarts and tricks would run out, and she too would end up captured. It wouldn’t be long before she began to formulate a plan to free herself from her German captives. Unbeknownst to the Germans, Ecaterina had managed to conceal a revolver from them. She waited for the perfect moment and then sprung on the soldiers guarding her. Fighting her way free, Ecaterina managed to get several shots and ended up killing two German soldiers. Finally free, she realized she had been hit, but it was a mere flesh wound, and she worked her way back to the front lines.

Over the next few days, Ecaterina’s battalion would see plenty of combat, and eventually, Ecaterina would suffer an injury bad enough to take her off the battlefield. The injured soldier would be moved to a hospital in Iasi for a month while her wound healed. Once she was released, Ecaterina hurried back to the front line under the command of a new leader, Lieutenant Mănoiu. She would return not as a soldier, though, but as a nurse stationed with his infantry regiment.
