CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Lena didn’t know how long she stayed inside the Proteus cabinet, but at some point she drifted off to sleep. When she awoke, night had fallen and the air was damp. Shivering, she listened for the sounds of the Germans, but all she could hear were troupe members calling her name. She closed her eyes, wishing she could hide in the maze forever. But she knew she had to face whatever was on the other side, so she fastened her braces, pushed apart the mirrors, and began walking toward the exit.

Anna Maria spotted her first. She cried out, rushing to Lena’s side, and wrapped her arms around her tightly.

“Don’t worry. We’ll find them.”

Lena’s heart lifted when she heard Anna Maria’s words. If she said they would find them, it meant they were still alive. It meant that there was a chance.
