Sophie was sitting down to a cup of tea after having just finished getting the new farmhand Tom settled into work. He had arrived on time and with replacement window glass to install straight away. Having done that, she then showed him around the farm and outlined what tasks she needed doing. He had several years of experience working on farms a lot bigger than hers, so he seemed more than capable of doing what she needed.

The sound of a car coming up the driveway drew her to the window. A flashy red sports car pulled up, making her old car look as bad as Seb’s had been in comparison.

Walking to the front door in confusion, she peered out as a woman climbed elegantly out of the car and confidently strutted towards the house, briefcase in hand. Seemingly oblivious to the uneven gravel driveway she walked across.

Dressed in high heels, a black knee-length pencil skirt and a burgundy blouse, she looked totally out of place on the farm. Her red hair pulled back in a bun, a few tendrils framing her face that was more heavily made up than anyone around here bothered with.

“Good morning, Miss Tanner,” the mystery woman called out a greeting as she got closer. “My name is Vanessa Coulton and I’m here from Morgan and Bernstein legal firm. I’ve been hired to represent you in your current litigation.”

Sophie blinked in shock. Surely Emma hadn’t found someone this quickly, and this lady looked far too fancy to work for any law firm she could afford.

“Who hired you?” she asked warily.

Vanessa smiled. “I’m not at liberty to discuss that, but rest assured that you’ll receive the best resources Morgan and Bernstein can offer, at no cost at all to you.”

She reached into her briefcase and produced a business card, handing it over with a smile. Taking the offered card, Sophie looked at the address - it was in the city.

“Was it Seb?” Sophie watched as a brief flash of amusement crossed the woman’s face. She wasn’t sure whether or not that was even the man’s real name, but Sophie couldn’t think of anyone else who could have hired Vanessa. Seb seemed to be the most likely option to be her generous benefactor.

“I really cannot say. May I come inside so we can discuss how to proceed?”

Sophie sighed. “I’m sorry, but I’m not comfortable letting a strange woman into my house.”

Vanessa wasn’t offended. “I understand. I noticed a diner in town. Not very private, but perhaps you’d feel more comfortable meeting there?”

Sophie nodded, that seemed like a sensible solution. “Okay, I’ll grab my things and meet you there.”

The woman smiled and headed back to her car. Sophie went back into the house and collected up the paperwork she had, locked up and called out to Tom to let him know she’d be out for a while. Then she drove to the diner.

The woman was standing outside the diner waiting for her. Both her and her fancy car were drawing a lot of attention from passers-by in the small town.
