That evening Tomas and Ruth clucked like fussy hens. They coaxed Adele and her brother to eat generous portions of roast duck and then sent them to the front porch to âtake in airâ while they prepared the large bowls of custard for dessert. Adele had to admit the Arrojo night was far more pleasant than the city even with the moths dancing under the gas lamp. Jackson got out his pipe and took a long inhale of smoke.
âA chill wind might come at any moment.â Adele settled next to him. He put an arm across the back of the swing in a lazy fashion. âIt does kick up quicker here than in San Francisco. You wouldnât think so, what with the bay and all.â
âIâve noticed that too.â His long legs swung them back and forth.
âWhat else have you noticed?â She leaned her head back.
âThe good, the bad, or the downright illogical?â he joked.
âIâm trying to get you to admit itâs not as bad in the country as you thought,â she said. âSo you might consider staying.â
âI canât, Del.â
âGood Lord, why not?â She sat up.
âMind your language.â
âIâll say what I like,â she snapped. âWhy not?â
âIâve a life in the city,â he insisted.
âA naughty life is a short life, as Papa used to say.â
âHe ought to have known,â Jackson retorted.
They were both quiet as Ruth brought out the custard. When she had gone inside, he continued, âI havenât had a naughty life, at least not in years. You know that, Del.â
âThen leave the fog behind and come live here with me in the country,â she pleaded.
âAnd help the sheriff catch cow thieves and wayfarers who roll through town, I suppose?â He was amused. âAnd every twenty years or so, perhaps a murderer.â
âI hardly think that represents the normal state of affairs here,â she said.
He shrugged. âIâm no country gentleman.â
âI hate to remind you of your responsibilities,â she began, then quickly retreated. âNo, I wonât play the distressed damsel in need of a watcher.â
He laughed. âYouâre more the devil in petticoats.â He smoked on his pipe for a time. âI suppose youâve a mind to abandon your young man for good.â
âWhat young man?â
He gave her a comical look. âYoung John Bellows.â
âSurely, you canât be serious.â She sniffed. âThe man looks like a crane. Heâs about as insightful as one.â
âHe also has a house in Pacific Heights, a beach house in Monterey, and a yacht,â said Jackson. âA rather impressive array of property for a young lawyer.â
âThose things are unimportant to me.â
âHeâs dependable,â Jackson argued. âIf youâre in need of a watcher, heâs your man.â
âI find this conversation distasteful, Jack.â She rose. âIâm going to bed, if you donât mind.â
He dumped the dregs of the pipe into the dirt under Tomas 'clicking tongue. âYes, weâve a busy day ahead of us tomorrow.â
âHelping the lads return all those boots?â she asked with a twinkle in her eye.
âNo, questioning Richard Tanning. Weâre bringing him into the station.â
Adele glanced at him. âYouâre going to arrest him?â
âQuestion, not arrest.
