The Traveling Meteorologist

Celebrating family connections is a key motivation in camping culture. Madison, Wisconsin, television meteorologist Karin Swanson learned the simple joys of camping from her parents. She is now passing the gifts of nature and travel on to her own children.

MADISON, WISCONSIN

Families can move you in all directions while camping.

Karin Swanson is a Madison television meteorologist who camps with her husband and kids in a tidy beige Coleman tent trailer that was handed down by her parents. Al and Linda Swanson bought the five-hundred-pound trailer in 1982 to tow behind their tiny Aries K station wagon. When Swanson was a child, the family saw most of America and every province of Canada through the windows of the trailer.

When her parents upgraded to a large motor home, Swanson inherited the tent trailer. It has not been remodeled. It is just the same as it was when her parents bought it.

Family memories run deep.

“Our first big trip in the tent trailer when I was a kid was out to the Badlands and the Black Hills,” Swanson said during an autumn conversation in a Madison coffee shop. (The trailer was stored at the family cabin in northern Wisconsin.) “This summer my husband and I re-created that with our kids. We got to show our kids some of the same sites now.” During the summer of 2016, their son, Weston, was seven and their daughter, Elin, was four. Her husband, Jeff, is a chemist.
