“Mom!” Veronica screeched in surprise, nearly running into Ursula in the door frame of the den. Cradling her laptop precariously, she looked up sternly at her parents. “Mom, Dad, I’m gonna need to use the den for my interview. It’s a video interview, and I need to find the right lighting. At least there is natural light here; it’s way too dark in the kitchen or the dining room in the afternoon. The sun is on this side of the house.”

With a singular focus on getting to the kitchen to start baking, Ursula was agreeable. “Sure, honey. That’s fine.”

Caleb sidestepped his daughter’s energy with, “It’s all yours, Vero.”

Once in the kitchen, Ursula wrapped her favorite apron around her waist to get started. She was feeling subdued; knowing that her husband was doing the right thing, and that he passionately believed it was the right thing, didn’t help calm her nervousness about his driving to a city where they’d been vandalizing trucks and threatening drivers. She suspected that there had been more attacks than he’d told her about. She reached for the flour and sugar canisters from the pantry mechanically, distracted by her thoughts.

She gradually became aware of heavy, staccato footsteps sounding off throughout the hallway, accompanied by frustrated vocal bursts. With a bowl in one hand, and a spatula in the other, she peaked out of the kitchen arch down the hallway, and gazed towards the front of the house where the den was. Veronica stomped out of there sharply, grabbed a table lamp from the table in the hall, and went back in. There seemed to be quiet for a moment, then a “Oh, come on!”

Ursula walked the length of the hallway and stood in the open French doors to the den. “Vero, what is going on?”

“Well, I needed to bring more lamps in here, because this stupid room doesn’t have enough stupid light, and then I checked my laptop to make sure everything was ready and working, and it isn’t! My laptop is completely black. What is going on? Is God trying to jeopardize my first real interview? Why is this so hard?” She slumped back in the desk chair, sliding down so that her face was barely visible above the laptop.

Ursula calmly walked behind her daughter to assess the situation. She knew she was the least technically adept in the family – and Vero knew it too – but she wanted to be a soothing presence. Veronica gazed morosely at her laptop, then with a startled jump said, “Oh, here it comes. Okay, it’s working. AH! What a moment to do an update! Okay. I’m okay Mom. Thanks though.” She shooed Ursula away.

“What time is your interview?” Ursula asked as she exited the room.

“In an hour. I want to be sure I’m all set,” Veronica responded in a rush, eyes glued to her monitor.

“My dear, you will do well. I am very confident about that. You have researched the company, the decision makers, and you practiced interview questions.
