Chapter Twenty
The knock came at the door, soft and tentative, just as Alonso pushed Gabriella onto her back and shifted himself on top of her. Another knock, a little more insistent, but Alonso ignored that one as well. He felt Gabriella spreading her legs under him and he pushed himself into her. She gasped and threw her head back and bit down on her finger. Alonso could not tell if her reaction was exaggerated or genuine and he did not actually care.
He thrust slowly at first and listened for another knock at the door, though he did not think there would be one. It was early morning, just past dawn, and he and Gabriella were on the small bed in Alonsoâs office, the siesta bed. The only person who would dare knock on the door just then was Alonsoâs secretary, Juan Cardero. Cardero knew with certainty that Alonso was within, and he knew as well that if Alonso did not answer after two knocks he had better not knock a third time.
Gabriella wrapped her legs around Alonsoâs waist and dug her heels into the small of his back. Her hair, her beautiful dark hair, lay fanned out on the pillow. Alonso leaned down and ran his lips along her neck and increased his pace and soon they were moving together with a beautiful rhythm, moving to the metronome creaking of the bedframe and the syncopated notes of their stifled moans.
âOh, Don Alonsoâ¦â Gabriella gasped, her voice soft, husky, alluring in a way that made Alonsoâs head swim.
âMmmâ¦â Alonso replied. He was not really one for talking in such situations.
âWas someone at the door?â Gabriella gasped.
âNo one,â Alonso said. âJust Cardero.â
If he thought there was someone else at the door he would not be so sanguine, nor would he still be on top of Gabriella. It would be bad if they were caught at this, bad for both of them, because neither of them could afford Franciscaâs wrath. For Gabriella it would mean dismissal, with little chance of ever finding decent employment again, and certainly not if she was out on the streets in the strange city of Santo Domingo. She would end as she was now, on her back, again and again, but she would not be giving her charms away gratis.
Francisca could not dismiss Alonso, of course, could not toss him out of the Casas Reales. There was not much that Francisca could do personally to harm him. But she could, and certainly would, relate her displeasure to her father, and her father could break Alonso like a reed.
Concerning as that was, Alonsoâs mind was elsewhere, swept up in the sensation of Gabriellaâs thin, muscular body moving under him, the smell of her skin, the sound of her ragged breath, the feeling of being inside her. He marveled at the intensity of it, and he wondered if that intensity was heightened by the risk he was taking.
Perhaps, though certainly his recent abstinence played a part. He had not been with Francisca in months, not since stepping aboard Nostra Sennora de Regla in the port of Seville.
