“TEACHER, YOU CALLED?”

“Did you complete my assignment? Is the goblin dead?”

“No. He was able to flee the province. The remaining goblins took off so quickly we weren’t able to catch them, our efforts to chase them down proving futile.”

“I don’t like that news. If the goblins find out we were able to summon five demons to the world—”

“They won’t find out,” Devit said, allowing himself the unheard-of license to interrupt the teacher. “We weren’t seen. Out of ten thousand goblins, barely two thousand remain, though we were unable to find the shaman’s body. Either it was taken away, or he survived and returned home. But the reason we weren’t able to run down the goblins is that one of the reincarnated attacked us in Lestar. It was able to eliminate two lesser demons before the middling got to him, though the demon sustained severe injuries, as well. We had to return to the mountains so our guest could recover. After three hundred sacrifices, his wounds healed.”

“One of the reincarnated?” The old mage’s eyes narrowed when he heard the long forgotten and highly unwelcome word.

“It’s not a mistake. I personally checked the remains and was able to recover sixty kilograms of Blood of the Beast.”

“Bring it to me immediately! That’s an order!”

“I already sent a reliable messenger, Teacher. The blood will be there in twenty hours at the latest. And it’s being carried in a negator, so the goblins won’t sense anything.”

“What about the bodies of the demons?”

“I left them where they were the way you taught us. Demon flesh from the true world can wreak havoc on its own.”

“That was the right thing to do. It’s time to turn Lestar into a desert—the mithril deposits there should be ours alone. But I don’t like your news. One of the reincarnated alive. Do you realize what this means?”

“Our ancient foe is rearing his head and nurturing his beasts. That’s why they wanted to give the province to the Western Empire. It was a trap set by the Elephants, Master. As I was able to discover, the new rulers of the Southern Empire were able to gather all the rabble they could find in the world in Lestar, where they’re planning on feeding them to the beasts. The province is perfect: the road south is through the mountains, and the Beast’s creatures don’t like the cold. Their only option is to head right into the Western Empire. The Beast’s servants know exactly where their main enemy is.”

“If there are no rumors yet, the draconids are still in their cages. Find them! The demons can sense those monsters, so use that,” the old mage said. “And remember, Devit, you made a mistake letting the shaman get away. Don’t disappoint me. I’ll be expecting the blood tomorrow.”
