Chapter 6

FINALLY, SATURDAY ARRIVES! THE day. My big debut is “on.” The one in which I create all The Allure. I am making good shit happen. I am finally earning my Team Four spot.

I appear front and center at two pm, the day before, when the check-in officially starts. The entire staff, from president to bellhop, are all in attendance, and neatly lined up for the ceremonial ribbon-cutting before welcoming the very first guest. A special search is always conducted for the honor of being the “first guest.” That person, or more often, that couple or family, gets the privilege of having their picture taken and used in promotional literature. They are filmed as soon as they arrive at the hotel, walk through the lobby, check in, and head to their room, holding their entry-card in hand. The first guest is a real paying person so there is absolutely no false advertising. That’s because we hand-pick and vet all of them before they are signed up. They have to agree to abide by the contracts that cover all kinds of releases so we can use their pictures for PR, video commercials and any other means of advertising.

Everyone claps as the ceremonial ribbon is cut before gathering their belongings and going inside. Instantly, the staff floods in to man their posts and we all head our own ways to begin our particular jobs.

The hotel is full. Many guests are already members of our International Club. It is a high-priced, VIP status that provides deep discounts and exclusive access and adventures.

We value these guests very highly as they are the most frequent and loyal flyers that lodge in our establishments. I have grown to appreciate the built-in customer base. We can always count on them to help sell out each grand opening. They are the bread ‘n’ butter of an opening like this one. This crowd prefers the exclusivity of being “first” rather than The Allure that we spend so much time dangling before them. They are my favorite customers as they take very little time, strategy and worry.

Now with it being the big day it means I’m in charge of everything. Starting with the morning brunch until I say goodnight to the last guest at the festival later tonight. The crowds of people flock to my brunch, funneling through the buffet line for the entire two hours it’s open. I am both heartened and proud. It shores up my confidence and satisfaction for what I’ve created this day.

Each guest leaves the meal with a unique gift: a custom-made box. Inside are their tickets for the day’s concert. We footed the bill for everyone staying with us. Honestly, the cost of the entrance fee was a mere pittance compared to the price of the rooms and facilities here.

But most people love getting gifts and free stuff and this exclusive crowd are no different. Opening the gorgeous boxes with a fancy key to find the tickets neatly arranged on tissue paper is another detail that seems to please the guests.
