Chapter 20

Nicole has been gone for the remainder of the workday. It’s nearly time to leave, and I haven’t seen her since our conversation in my office.

The recording app worked perfectly, catching Nicole’s voice easily, being on top of my desk. The problem is that it caught nothing of worth.

I remind myself that there will be other opportunities. A few times throughout the day I secretly swear under my breath at myself for my bare-faced lie about Evan busting a water pipe. Did I make it too obvious that I was recording the conversation? I’m not exactly very good at attempting to blackmail my boss. I wonder why it comes so naturally to Nicole.

That sick feeling in my stomach has returned.

What the hell do I do now?

Evan needs to know what’s happening. He needs to know what his crazy ex-fiancé is putting me through.

Tonight, at our anniversary dinner, I’ll tell him everything. No more keeping secrets. We’re married and we need to be a team about this.

I hate the idea that on a day celebrating our marriage, we have to spend it talking about his ex-fiancé. Instead of having a happy day reminiscing about our love story, we’ll focus on how a former lover is ruining everything in my life.

The buildup to the confrontation with Nicole was enough to make me physically ill. Thinking about having another difficult conversation with Evan today makes me nauseous.

Thankfully, the restaurant isn't too far away from the office. We made reservations for soon after work was done. I’ll see Evan soon. I’ll get everything off my chest about what’s happening and the mess that I am in because of it. I know he’ll raise hell. I imagine if it was him having to confront Nicole today, he wouldn’t bother with a recording device. He would scream and shout at her, while everyone listened. No need for a listening device because everyone would witness what’s happening.

I sigh, thinking how I should have handled the conversation with Nicole better.

A knock on my office door breaks my sorrows. I half-expect Nicole to be there again, tormenting me further, but instead it’s Leigh. She waves at me before entering.

“Hey, what gives?” she asks. “No coffee this morning. And barely a hello.” She grins at me. Hers is so much more authentic than our boss’s. When she sees my face, her happiness fades. “Everything okay?”

“Well, not really, I guess,” I say. I think about telling her about Nicole. How would she react if I did? Would she be on my side? Nicole is her boss too.

No, I won't involve anyone else in this mess. Leigh has been nothing but good. I won’t drag her down with me.

“It’s my anniversary today with Evan,” I say.

“Oh,” she says confused. “Shouldn’t you be happy then?”

I give a thin smile. “Yeah, I am. It’s just been a day, you know?”

Leigh nods in agreement. “Nicole has been on my ass all day. I think she’s worried about that meeting today. She’s been at the Warner Group across town all day.
