Chapter 17
Gray hit the water a split second after Cici. The frothy ocean was freezing in this spot, almost icy, unlike the water down the shoreline. He managed to gulp in a breath before they went under, but he didnât know what good it would do when they were thrashed against the rocks. To his surprise, their bodies copied the tennis ball and slid into the stony grotto without so much as grazing the jagged rocks. He managed to find his footing on soft sand in the now-shallow pond. Cici let go of his hand to gain her own balance, but when she stood still and marveled at their surroundings, he grabbed her arm and pulled her to the sandy shore. Might as well get out quick in case any sea life decided to join them. The last thing they needed was to be munched on by a shark or stung by a jellyfish. Not that either would probably happen, but better safe than sorry.
Once they stood on dry land, Cici didnât say anything. She eyed him warily, as if expecting him to blow up at her. To be honest, he noticed that about her. She did something impulsive, and then cowered, expecting to be yelled at. Thinking back, he noticed Natalie and Alyssa snapped at her for acting without thinking quite often. It didnât annoy Gray, but rather he found it to be a good quality, maybe because of his own tendency to freeze up while he looked at every angle multiple times. Hadnât she solved the puzzle in the library room by hurling the book at the wall? And they never would have gotten in here if heâd been in charge. Sure, they might have found a way in up on the rocks, but the more he thought about it, the less likely it seemed. Yet, at least. Besides, if it was up to him to jump, theyâd still be frozen up on the edge. Sure, if theyâd ended up smashed against the jagged rocks, heâd feel different, but here they were.
In a quiet voice, she said, âI knew it would happen like this. Donât ask me how, but I did. Maybe it was too hasty, and maybe I should have discussed it with you, but I knew weâd get in here with no troubles.â Her eyes pleaded with him not to be angry.
âCici, itâs okay,â he said. âI think I heard the little voice, too, but I ignored it. If it wasnât for you, weâd still be up there trying to figure out how to get in. Youâre the hero here. You always turn out to be the hero.â
A second later, he had no idea what was going on. She was on him, kissing him hard. He tried to gasp in surprise but couldnât get it out. Then, when she didnât back off like he expected, he realized he didnât want her to, so he went with it. Sure, they were standing in a dark and rocky
