At his car, Striker opened the door, then regarded her. âIâm curious about something.â
Natasha gave him a pained look. âPlease, donât ask me anymore about it.â
âNo, Iâm respecting that. I was wondering if you meant everything you said to Roger.â
Natasha frowned as if she didnât understand.
âYou insinuated you had thought about letting yourself fall in love with him.â
âI donât lie, Striker.â
He drew back, shocked.
âI could probably be happy with him. Heâs a great guy, very sweet and sensitive, a lot of fun, plus smart as hell. Youâd never know heâs a rich man as unpretentious as he is, and I really respect that in him.â
Striker wondered if she considered him pretentious. He hoped not.
Natasha smiled a little. âTo be honest, I could get real used to living this kind of lifestyle. I think Iâd be, well, very comfortable with Roger.â She gave him a look he couldnât read.
âBut?â
âBut right now, I donât think Iâm ready for comfortable. Not yet.â
Striker nodded, glad to hear that.
Natasha looked away from him. âSo, how much did you see?â she said in a low voice.
âSee?â
âYou know, when you turned on the lights.â She looked back at him and seemed embarrassed. âYou didnât really see me naked, right? I mean, I was under the water, in the deep end, pretty far away.â
Striker resisted the urge to smile, thinking he had gotten a good enough glimpse to know he liked what he saw.
âWater distorts things, you know. Makes some things look larger than they actually are, others smaller.â
He grinned at her. âYeah?â
Natasha gave him an exasperated look.
âI didnât see anything,â he lied.
The relief was evident on her face. She reached out and touched his arm. âThanks, Striker. Thanks for listening. I think youâve managed to help me in some way.â
Striker brought her hand up to his mouth and grazed her fingers with his lips. âTake care of yourself, Natasha. You scare me sometimes with your reckless ways.â
She nodded.
He climbed in his vehicle, but before he shut the door, said, âOh, by the way, tomorrow you get the reprimand you missed tonight.â
âShoot.â She caught his grin when she looked back at him.
Striker motioned for her to go inside. She turned and waved at the door.
Natasha walked into the house with a beaming smile on her face, studying her fingers, which still tingled from where Strikerâs lips kissed them. She heard voices from the kitchen and remembered Pit and Bigun were mad at her because she had gotten them in trouble. She sniffed her running nose, knew her eyes were all red and swollen. Okay, she knew how to get them to feel better toward her.
Entering the kitchen, she looked at them long enough so they would see her tear-streaked, puffy face. She used a paper towel to wipe at her nose, then approached the table, where they sat, eating, of course.
âIâm sorry, guys. That was all my fault, and Iâm so sorry I got you in trouble with Striker,â Natasha said, acting as if she were on the verge of crying.
