Chapter 30

We’re fugitives for something we didn’t do. Was Sergei Russian, not Ukrainian? I read online there’s a big difference between the cultures, that Ukrainians are more open-minded and that Russians tend to be xenophobes. Volertech wouldn’t have hired him if he was Russian or the citizen of any other enemy nation. Which makes me wonder what exactly did they want with us? Why didn’t they just arrest us at the base? They must have wanted to know where we were going really badly. One thing I never, ever did was transmit those coordinates electronically. Despite the encryption I was using, it’s remotely possible that they hacked my phone or other equipment to get certain information about our cargo, but not that.

Did Volertech send them? Or someone else? Whoever they were, they didn’t plan very well. They should have planted someone in our group, gotten our trust, and betrayed us. Maybe they realized that we were too tight knit for that.

One thing I do know is that someone infiltrated Volertech on Christmas. The official memo from the CEO said that there had been a breach of security protocol, and that a couple of security personnel had been injured pursuing the intruder. However, no suspects had been taken into custody because the intruder had purportedly jumped to his death. I don’t remember hearing anything about the identity of the body. But then, they wouldn’t have told us anything, anyway. They would have done exactly what they did do: double down on security and forbid us from talking about it.

When the actual infiltration went down on Christmas, I was wearing headphones, listening to my jams as I patrolled with the drone down in the hangar. Only one goon with a gun had been assigned to the alternate entrance in the sister building, whereas four patrolled our building, in addition to the security guard at the front entrance, who’s since been let go. If Krampus were coming to kill me, he would logically take the entrance with fewer people. Less resistance.

When I heard the gunshots, I immediately thought Krampus was in the building. I had been stupid enough to post that “letter” to him on my reconnaissance trip on the icebreaker. But it couldn’t have been Krampus because it sounded like whoever had broken in was pursued on foot by security. Krampus would never run. He can deflect bullets and annihilate everything in his path. So whoever it was must have infiltrated the building thinking no one was there. That still makes no sense when anyone on 4Chan could probably get more information using a laptop while sitting in a café in Hong Kong rather than risking a full-body break in. Unless, of course, the thief wanted to steal some tech. Still, that’s incredibly risky. Or stupid.

Whatever they were after, maybe Volertech now thinks I had something to do with that. Again, though, why not just arrest us? Why have an Interpol agent bully us into leading him to our site? They can’t possibly know about Aidan.
