Chapter 18

Nick

She was nestled against me as we walked out, heating up my thoughts.

Katie wanted to go back to the room and get room service, but I vetoed that idea. I made her pick, and she chose Thai for dinner, so we found a small local hole-in-the-wall not far from the park.

It worked for me because I wanted something quick so I could get back to the room before long. I had plans for tonight and as they came to mind I kept having to adjust my pants.

All they had on the menu were Thai beers, so I ordered one while Katie stuck to water and tea.

One sip of the beer and I knew why you didn't find these in any respectable bar. I flagged down our waitress and asked for a Coke instead. Lesson learned.

“With all of your computer knowledge, have you ever thought about teaching?” she asked. That came out of nowhere.

“You have got to be kidding.”

“No, seriously, you ought to think about it.”

I ignored her. She had no idea what it was like to apply for a job with a record.

She broke apart her chopsticks. “I know I'm not missing any work today, but how can you afford to take the day off?”

I took a sip of my Coke. “I'm between jobs right now, so I'm not missing anything.”

“Don't you have to be available for clients?”

“Yes and no. I’m my own boss so I get to set the rules. Rule number one is I work when I want to, and today I don't want to. My whole business is set up—that's not really right—my whole life is set up so that I can pick up and take off whenever I want to.”

“I see,” she said.

The soup arrived.

“After Folsom, freedom of movement is special to me. I can’t be tied down. I have to be able to change my mind and go do something different tomorrow if I choose.”

I slurped some soup with one of those crazy-big Chinese soup spoons.

Katie took a spoonful of hers. “Why did you do it?”

“Do what?”

“What you did for your brother.”

“Lester may not have been the sharpest tool in the shed, but he was my brother. I had to protect him.” I took another sip of my Coke. “Lester was not a strong kid. For him, prison would have been a death sentence. I did the only thing I could to save him.”

“But two years in prison?”

“He needed my help, and I gave it to him. Shit, your fuckass brother Liam got his nose broken trying to protect you from me. It’s what big brothers do.”

She thought about that and nodded.

I wasn’t certain she could ever truly understand a big brother’s responsibilities.

As I asked her to tell me what she thought about today, her smile grew and the little girl displaced the in-control woman. This place had worked its magic on her and brought her to a happier place.

Suddenly her foot traced a path under the tablecloth up my leg as she smiled coyly.
