Chapter 13

Brianna

.

“The book sales are fucking incredible,” Bas, my publicist said to me.

Bas and I had started working together even before I went to work with my stepfather and had published my first book, ‘Midnight Lover.’ In the five years, we had worked together we had grown very close and had established an excellent working relationship. Bas was born and raised in the Bronx and had a bit of a gruff attitude. It had taken a little while to get used to it but now that I did, I didn’t mind it and kind of like it. He had called me to give me an update and to check on how the latest book was coming along.

“I would hope so, we’ve certainly been promoting the crap out of it,” I said.

“Isn’t that my job? Isn’t that why you wrote a great book, so that people would want to read it? So, that a lot of people would want to read it and we would both make a lot of money?” he asked.

“Yes. I’m glad it’s going well. Thank you for all your hard work. It hasn’t gone unnoticed,” I said.

“That is greatly appreciated. You’re a dream to work with compared to some of the other idiots I get stuck with. And your writing is actually good, which makes my life easy. Now, if you could just get the story to continue even after this next book you’re writing, then you would be my favorite author ever,” he said.

I just laughed. “We’ve discussed this. Regina and Thomas’s story is going to be finished when this last book comes out. I think they, and the readers, have been on enough of a roller coaster ride. They need the closure.”

“And the happily ever after?” he asked.

“It’s a romance. Of course, there’s a happily ever after,” I stated.

“Oh, good. I couldn’t handle it if they didn’t,” Bas said with a sigh.

“Did you really think that I wasn’t going to give them that?” I asked.

“I never know with you. You do like to kill off characters or at least put them in some pretty precarious situations,” he countered.

“One! I killed off one character and it was necessary for Regina’s growth. Now be nice to me or I’ll find a way to kill off Gertrude,” I teased.

“What! Don’t you even joke about that. She’s the matriarch of the company. You can’t do that! Though, it would be a great final twist and could set up for other stories. If that’s what you want to do. But I would just cry if Grandma Gertrude died. And I don’t cry,” he said.

“Oh, I was only teasing, but I hadn’t thought of it that way. It could work into a new set of books. I might have to think about that,” I said.

“On the one hand, I’m happy that you’re thinking of sequels and spin-offs or whatever else it might be, but I still don’t like the idea of Gertrude dying.”

“She’s almost ninety-years old. She’s going to die sometime.”

“I know that, but I like thinking she’ll be alive at the end of the book,” he said.
