Sasha began to wake. For a few heavenly moments she hovered in an imaginary world where love prevailed and everything was promising, positive and achievable. But then, as quickly as the sensation had arisen, it left, leaving her tumbling into the real world and seeing everything through fresh eyes with devastating simplicity. As much as she would like to believe they could make it work, a dedicated big time countryman and an out-and-out career-driven city woman would never stand a chance. The only way she’d ever even consider living in the country was to settle down and have a family, and Blake had made it very clear he wasn’t keen on having kids. And besides, long distance relationships were doomed to fail—they would only grow to hate each other. That was the very last thing she wanted. She would rather leave him with a deep lingering memory of her than go through the heartbreaking motions of a relationship that was never going to go anywhere.

The harsh reality of the situation hit her like a thunderclap.

She should go. She really should. This was dangerous territory.

But then she spotted the discarded dinner tray on the floor and recalled the feast they’d shared along with a dirty martini each. Olives stuffed with chili and feta, cheeses, dolmades, marinated baby octopus, freshly shucked oysters and the finest caviar she’d ever tasted. Blake had tried his best to taste all of it, to share her love of Mediterranean food, his expression of distaste as he’d chewed a piece of baby octopus then tried to swallow it side-splittingly hilarious and extremely heartwarming. It had been such a simple gesture, but so very thoughtful and touching. Wrapped in robes, they’d laughed and talked and eaten for what felt like hours, and then indulged in another long round of toe-curling, breathtaking, erogenous sex that had satisfied her beyond belief and left her wanting even more of him. Blake Wellstone was more man than she had ever experienced, or ever allowed herself to believe existed.

Why was the universe playing with her like this?

Her body responded to the sexual reminiscences, the flood of warmth sending her nether regions ablaze once more. She pressed her thighs together, her yearning to ravish Blake from his sleep making her quiver. She was so warm and cosy with him spooning her, his big strong arms encompassing her in a way she couldn’t help but love, making her feel like nothing could ever hurt her, although she envisioned that when he woke this blissful feeling would quickly fade away, only to be replaced by the bleakness of their incomparable lives.

She squeezed her eyes shut, afraid that if she didn’t tears might well. She didn’t want to notice how their bodies fit together so perfectly, how the hard sweep of his angles moulded into her soft curves as if they were chiselled from the same piece of sandstone, or that she felt at home within his embrace.
