âSERGEANT COOLEY!â
Halfway up the tree-hooded slope, the sergeant stopped walking and turned around. Hackermeyer saw a surprised smile appear on Cooleyâs lips and, suddenly, he felt an overwhelming urge to laugh. A guttural sound trembled in his throat as he started up the slope beside the German. He barely restrained himself from waving.
Cooley waited, hands fisted on his hips, smiling and nodding. âWell, Iâll be damned,â he said as Hackermeyer reached him.
âHi,â said Hackermeyer.
Cooley glanced over at the German, then back again. âYou do get around, donât you?â he said.
The ends of Hackermeyerâs lips twitched upward in a nervous smile. âI got a Krauâa German,â he said.
âCaught him yourself?â
Hackermeyer nodded quickly. âYeah.â
âHas he been searched?â
âYeah, someâsome sergeant did.â
Cooley smiled at him again and shook his head. âHackermeyer,â he said.
Hackermeyer swallowed. âYeah?â
Cooley slapped his shoulder. âGlad to see you, son,â he said.
Hackermeyer couldnât loosen the stricture in his throat. He looked at Cooley intently, wanting to tell the sergeant how glad he was to be back. Cooley was looking around the slope.
âWhy donât you dig in behind that fallen tree over there?â said Cooley, turning back. âYouâll be alone, Iâm afraid. Fearfeatherâs already dug in with Guthrie and Iâm with Bernie.â
Hackermeyer felt an added swell of pleasure.
âWhere are they?â he asked. He was pleased to know they were alive.
âThe boys are over there,â said Cooley, pointing.
Hackermeyer saw, beneath the shadow of a pine tree, two helmeted heads just above the ground surface. Good old Fearfeather, he thought. Good old Guthrie. How marvelous that they were still alive.
He turned back as Cooley patted his arm. âBetter get to it, son,â Cooley told him.
âHow come weâreâdigging in here?â Hackermeyer asked. He felt as if he wanted to talk and talk with Cooley.
âWeâre expecting an attack,â said Cooley. âWe donât know when itâs coming but weâre sure it will. You better get your gear.â
Hackermeyer shivered. âOh,â he said. âWellââ He stared blankly at the sergeant.
âWhatâs wrong?â
âIâIâI donât have any,â said Hackermeyer. âI meanââ
âNothing?â
Hackermeyer swallowed hard. âWell,â he said, âI had toâsee, I had to leave it.â He felt his stomach churning. âSee, I wasââ
âOkay, okay.â Cooley patted his arm. âDonât get rattled. It happens to the best of them. Iâll scrape up something for you. You can use Lippincottâs M1.â
Hackermeyerâs mouth opened. âOh,â he said faintly. âIsâis heâ?â
âNo, just wounded. Come on, weâd better get you his rifle now. Youâll be needing it. The rest, Iâll get later.â Cooley gestured once and the German nodded.
They started up the slope, the German ahead of them. Everywhere Hackermeyer looked, men were digging in.
âExpecting an attack, hanh?â he said.
âItâll come,â said Cooley. âTonight. Tomorrow morning.â
Hackermeyer nodded, conscious of a mounting disappointment. Heâd gone through so much. Yet nothing was changed, nothing was improved.
âThe Kraut came with you even though you didnât have a gun?â asked Cooley.
Hackermeyer cleared his throat. âYeah,â he said. âHe wasâglad to come.â He could feel the exhilaration fading rapidly now. It was like a light going dim.
âWhere you been?â asked Cooley.
âOh, Iâfell down that hill,â Hackermeyer answered.
