Chapter Sixteen – Sandra

Sandra sighed contentedly as she sizzled pancakes on the hot griddle. Every time she thought of Jesse’s tender caress from the night before, her cheeks flamed, and her breath caught in her throat.

“Mommy, I’m starving. And so is Tigger,” Emily announced as she climbed onto one of the wooden chairs surrounding the small kitchen table, while Tigger pounced on the chair leg as it slid across the floor.

Sandra watched the kitten and smiled at his playful behavior. “Well, you have pancakes for breakfast, but Tigger has his own food. Have you fed him yet?”

“Yes, but I’m sure he’d like to try pancakes, too,” Emily replied, saving Sandra from a lecture about how the deal was that Emily fed Tigger and combed his sleek fur. Sandra handled the kitty litter and veterinary visits. Somehow, she’d gotten the raw end of the deal.

“Tigger shouldn’t eat human food,” Sandra reminded her daughter.

“And I shouldn’t eat cat food,” Emily joked as Tigger jumped onto her lap, his nose twitching as he smelled the warm pancakes.

“Okay, pancakes are ready. Tigger needs to go on the floor.” As if hearing Sandra’s words, Tigger jumped down and scampered out of the room.

“Tigger can understand everything you say,” Emily said solemnly, and reached for the maple syrup.

“He’s a smart kitten.” Sandra scooped the fluffy, golden-brown pancakes onto a plate and set them on the table in front of Emily.

“Yummy.” Emily poured on the syrup and then eagerly grabbed her fork and dug in.

Sandra watched her daughter for a long moment with some relief. She’d been so worried that Emily wouldn’t settle here. But over the last couple of days, she’d seemed like her old self.

“Chew before you swallow.” Sandra sat down with a plate of pancakes and added some syrup. “Oh, there’s fruit, too.”

She got up out of her seat and grabbed a bowl of chopped fruit. Her mind had been so filled with images of Jesse that she peeled and chopped it in a daze.

As they ate, Sandra studied her daughter’s face. “Did you sleep well last night, Emily?” Emily had struggled to sleep the first few nights in their new house, but she seemed to be over that now.

“Uh-huh!” Emily nodded enthusiastically, wiping a blob of syrup from her chin. “I dreamt about riding Jasper again with Grant and Lana at the ranch. Can we go back there soon?”

“I’m sure we can. Grant said he would be more than happy to have us visit again.” Sandra sipped her coffee as Emily stuffed the last of her pancakes into her mouth.

“Yay! I can’t wait!” Emily hopped off her chair. “I’m going to get my shoes and coat.”

“Sounds like a plan.” Sandra watched as her daughter skipped away from the table with an eagerness she hadn’t seen in a long while.

Everything was just about perfect. Sandra smiled to herself as she sat in peace for a few minutes, savoring her cup of coffee before the day started.

“Oh. We need to go,” Sandra called as she quickly cleared the breakfast dishes.
