Ten Years Ago

Carter, age 18

“Congratulations, Carter.” Mr. Thompson, the math teacher, clapped a hand on his back.

“Thanks, Mr. Thompson. I’d better get inside; it looks like they’re getting us all lined up.”

The teacher smiled and nodded.

Carter hurried through the backstage door to the auditorium, his heart beating fast to match his excitement. This was it. Graduation. He’d already packed up his meager belongings and they waited in his bedroom in the home he would no longer call his after tonight. He thought about Cody. And their mom. She refused to leave Dick-wad, but after many discussions, only a few of which Carter raised his voice, she consented to let Cody go with him to college.

The clincher took place just a couple of weeks ago, when Carter had been at an early graduation party and The Dick had taken full advantage of his absence. Their mom had come home from the late shift to find Cody barricaded in his bedroom while The Dick destroyed the living room. Cody’s left eye was swollen shut, and she knew that once Carter left, the abuse would ramp up again.

So, Cody’s stuff was packed and waiting at the house, too. They’d move into their bachelor pad the next day. A two-hour bus ride away from this nightmare.

Carter pulled his phone out of his pocket. He’d missed a call from his mom. He listened to the voicemail telling him they were running late, then he deleted it and shoved it back in his pocket beneath the gown before finding his place in line outside the auditorium.
