Chapter 20

Maverick

I never want to get out of this bed.

Maggie’s hand is curled up on the center of my chest and everything feels right. I don’t know if it’s because I’m older now and know what I want or not, but never once did I feel this level of comfort when I was with Hannah. Should I be comparing how I feel now with Maggie versus how I felt with my ex-wife a decade ago? No, probably not … because there is no comparison.

Wrapping my fingers around her hand, I pull it to my lips and place a gentle kiss to her knuckles. When she climbed into the bed last night and snuggled up to me, I wasn’t sure how long she was going to stay. Then she fell asleep, and I did, too. It’s the first time I’ve shared a bed with anyone all night since Hannah and I split up.

It’s the first time I’ve wanted to share this space with anyone since the day Sawyer and I moved into the house.

Laying on her stomach beside me, Maggie is facing the window where the sun has just begun brightening the horizon. Her breathing is steady and rhythmic; I’m certain she’s not awake yet. I’m not worried that she isn’t, except I know she’s planning to be back home early to help her mom start the food for later today. I’ll have to head to my parents’ house at some point this morning, but I have plenty of time to get ready.

Filled with emotion, I kiss her fingers again. What happens now? How do we navigate this when Sawyer is home and she’s got to be home at night with Gram? We haven’t had conversations about the future. This is still new for both of us. Neither of us have been in a long-term relationship in nearly a decade, which is the biggest reason we have been moving slowly.

I just didn’t expect to feel the way I do so soon. I have enjoyed every second of getting to know Maggie, but I didn’t plan on my heart rate rising every time I saw her walking my way or each time her name lights up my phone.

“I just might be falling in love with you Margaret Regina Florence Southard,” I say in the quiet of the room.

I make every effort to let her sleep a little longer and slip out from beneath the covers. Kissing her bare shoulder, I make sure the blankets are tucked in close to keep her warm, then grab my hoodie from the chair in the corner and sneak out of the room.

Coffee to get the day started, check the weather, scroll the newsfeed. That’s how my day usually starts. Even with Maggie here, I’m going to stick to the routine, especially since I’m sure she will want coffee when she gets out of bed.

Looking out the back window over the farm, I witness the beauty of the day as the sun rises high enough behind me to make the trees look like they’re on fire.
