Aboard the Balonia, the team watched, their faces tense, as Fasslane spoke to the camera while pushing through the forest.

Broadcasting the whole expedition live in full high-definition quality, Fasslane really had spared no expense at making this the biggest spectacle possible.

“He’s got over a million people watching live,” Baxter said, glancing up from the computer. “It’s all-over social media. People are sharing and reposting the feed. It’s only a matter of time before the major news networks pick up the story, too.”

Winslow reduced the volume as the camera followed Fasslane up toward the jungle.

The team aboard the Balonia stood silent for several seconds.

“I’ve got a bad feeling about this,” Eden said, when the silence had long past its breaking point.

“Yes, me too,” Beaumont scoffed, tightly folding his arms. “A buffoon like that just wandering in to an important archaeological find. There’s no knowing what damage he’ll do. There should be a proper team in there. They need to catalogue everything as…”

“Absolutely agree,” Ramirez said, bitterly. “This was supposed to be our find.”

“You’re right, but that’s not what I meant,” Eden interjected. “I mean, this has all just come far too easy for him. It’s too much of a coincidence. How did he say the orb came to be in his possession?”

“During his first live video he said that a contact passed it on to him,” Baxter said. “He didn’t say anything else.”

“Suspicious,” Athena added.

“Yeah. He must know that people will ask that question,” Eden said. “I suppose he’s hoping that whatever he finds is so amazing, that how he got the orb is forgotten about.”

“Thief,” Ramirez interjected.

“Hold on a moment.” Winslow turned and addressed Ramirez, who sat in a chair a few feet away. The Professor still didn’t look well after his ordeal, although was still refusing to rest. “Professor, who knew that you’d removed the orb from the dig site at Teotihuacán?”

Ramirez thought for a long moment. “Only myself, DeLuca and a very small number of trusted colleagues. We wanted to run thorough analysis before we shared what we’d found.”

“It wasn’t public knowledge then?” Winslow reiterated.

Ramirez shook his head. “Absolutely not.”

“Then Fasslane wouldn’t know that’s where the orb came from,” Eden said. A thought hovered nebulously at the edge of her consciousness. She tried to grasp at it, but it dissolved before she could drag it into the light.

“We need to go back to the beginning,” Winslow said. “We need to work through it all again.”

Eden rolled her eyes. Although she respected her dad’s systematic approach to things, it was never the quickest one. She flushed red when she noticed her father looking at her, having seen the gesture. “Sure, absolutely,” Eden nodded, pretending to be keen.

“What do we know about this Fasslane character?” Winslow said, pointing at the screen. On the live feed, Fasslane was now pushing his way through the jungle.

Baxter reduced the live feed to occupy half the screen and loaded the Council of Selene’s no-holds-barred search engine. His fingers flashed across the keys as he set a search running.
