On her way back to the office, Kitty regretted speaking so quickly. Cooper was leaving. Her position was precarious as it was. And if she worked to help the gang, it would be one more thing she was doing behind Edgarâs back. She already kept a lot from her husband as it was. Their relationship, their friendship, their intimacy was suffering because of it.
Since the wedding, she had shared very little with him about the gang. Save for Millie, he never asked about them. She believed he had forgotten that Judith and Khan even existed. And wasnât that what the Nazis wanted to do as well? Get rid of exactly these kinds of people? The Big Charlies and Khans, the Oskars and Arturs of Ostmark?
With renewed courage, she decided she would just have to determine what her role would be. Not only at the consulate, but in helping to resist the regime. She invited Millie out for a drink after work and they headed to the tavern across the street where Kitty told her all about Cooperâs meeting.
âCooper made the mistake of putting his political position first,â Millie said.
âWhat do you mean?â Kitty asked.
âHe did everything not to appear overly sympathetic or benevolent. Or heâd never come up for the prime position heâs getting.â
Kitty disagreed. âHe never feared criticism for doing the right thing by the people.â
Millie shrugged. âI thought he was very stringent about implementing the immigration policies.â
Now she knew how she might test Millieâs openness to a fledgling resistance effort. âCooper knows how to bend the rules without breaking them. If it were up to me, Iâd be breaking them one after the other, as far as they go. You know what I mean?â
Millie tilted her head. âIf Morris couldnât do it, Messersmith and Geist would rein you right back in.â
âIâd like to see them try,â Kitty said.
âMe, too,â Millie laughed. She sipped her wine.
âI think Cooperâs way is better.â Kitty looked curiously at her. âWhat about you? Would you bend the rules?â
Millie placed her glass back on the table and studied Kitty. âYou were with Judith today. And the gang?â
Kitty nodded.
âUh-huh,â Millie said. âAnything I should know?â
Kitty leaned forward and Millie mirrored her. âItâs only an idea.â
âDo tell,â Millie whispered. âMy lips are sealed.â
