On her way back to the office, Kitty regretted speaking so quickly. Cooper was leaving. Her position was precarious as it was. And if she worked to help the gang, it would be one more thing she was doing behind Edgar’s back. She already kept a lot from her husband as it was. Their relationship, their friendship, their intimacy was suffering because of it.

Since the wedding, she had shared very little with him about the gang. Save for Millie, he never asked about them. She believed he had forgotten that Judith and Khan even existed. And wasn’t that what the Nazis wanted to do as well? Get rid of exactly these kinds of people? The Big Charlies and Khans, the Oskars and Arturs of Ostmark?

With renewed courage, she decided she would just have to determine what her role would be. Not only at the consulate, but in helping to resist the regime. She invited Millie out for a drink after work and they headed to the tavern across the street where Kitty told her all about Cooper’s meeting.

“Cooper made the mistake of putting his political position first,” Millie said.

“What do you mean?” Kitty asked.

“He did everything not to appear overly sympathetic or benevolent. Or he’d never come up for the prime position he’s getting.”

Kitty disagreed. “He never feared criticism for doing the right thing by the people.”

Millie shrugged. “I thought he was very stringent about implementing the immigration policies.”

Now she knew how she might test Millie’s openness to a fledgling resistance effort. “Cooper knows how to bend the rules without breaking them. If it were up to me, I’d be breaking them one after the other, as far as they go. You know what I mean?”

Millie tilted her head. “If Morris couldn’t do it, Messersmith and Geist would rein you right back in.”

“I’d like to see them try,” Kitty said.

“Me, too,” Millie laughed. She sipped her wine.

“I think Cooper’s way is better.” Kitty looked curiously at her. “What about you? Would you bend the rules?”

Millie placed her glass back on the table and studied Kitty. “You were with Judith today. And the gang?”

Kitty nodded.

“Uh-huh,” Millie said. “Anything I should know?”

Kitty leaned forward and Millie mirrored her. “It’s only an idea.”

“Do tell,” Millie whispered. “My lips are sealed.”
