Chapter Thirty-Three

As the dark liquid poured into the cup, its intoxicating aroma drifted like an enchanted spell to Frya’s nose. She shut her eyes for a moment – breathing it in, relishing it – before opening them again. Today felt like the first day of a new life. One that was starting from scratch. No regretful past hanging like a noose around her neck. No future filled with foreboding. Just the present.

‘Smells wonderful.’

She turned to see Achilleus with a broad smile and twinkling eyes.

‘You feel it, too, I see.’

‘Like the slate’s been wiped clean and there’s nothing to fear anymore.’

‘Like we are born again.’

‘So, what now?’

He moved towards her. ‘Now, I stop running. Now I take you in my arms…’ As he spoke, he acted on his words and his desire, taking her in his arms. He held her close.

Her mouth parted, her heart raced and passion coursed through her body. ‘Don’t stop,’ she whispered, swooping her lips to his.

They withdrew a fraction – their breaths heaving now – and met again: one kiss, then another, their lips sealing together, catching up on all their repressed urges.

Frya’s passions stirred for the first time in nearly five years. Since losing Johan, she had never thought she would feel like this again.

For Achilleus, it was a newfound feeling. No control. No desire to run. Instead, he wanted to bury himself in an eternal kiss on lips as sweet as syrup.

Their lips finally parted, and they stared at one another with barely an inch between them.

‘I could get lost in those,’ he said.

‘What’s stopping you?’

‘I’ve fallen for you.’

‘And I for you.’

‘I don’t want to leave your side again.’

‘You don’t have to.’

‘So, what? I stay here?’

‘This is exactly where you’re supposed to be. Even Salvatrice said it last night.’

‘And Domenico?’

‘Him too. You’re both a part of this family now.’

He cupped her face in his hands. ‘I’ve never felt like this before.’

‘Like how, tell me?’

He kissed her lips, savouring the moment like a fine wine. ‘Like you’re locked in here,’ he said, pounding on his chest. ‘That you are everything I want, and everything I never knew I wanted. Like the very purpose of my breath and heartbeat is so I can see your face every day and be in your presence.’

‘Love,’ she said.

‘Yes, that’s it. I love you.’

‘And I fell for you from the moment I saw you in Athens. With everything going on, I’ve had to fight it.’

Their lips drew in.

‘No more fighting,’ he said.

‘No more fight—’

His lips pressed against hers.

‘Hello, you two.’

They turned to see Salvatrice smiling up at them.

‘Hello, Salvatrice,’ they said in unison, letting go of one another.

She climbed onto the nearby chair.

‘What would you like for breakfast?’ asked Achilleus. ‘I’m a chef, you know.’

She looked at him with amusement. ‘I know that, silly.’

They laughed. ‘Of course, you do,’ said Achilleus. ‘What was I thinking!?’

‘Cherry granola with coconut yoghurt,’ announced Salvatrice.

‘Coming right up,’ said Frya, who proceeded to prepare her meal, before placing it on the table with a spoon.

‘Thank you.
