Ants in pants

One cloudy day Bella and her mum took Buttons for a walk in Foxley Woods. He’d never been there before and Bella wanted to show him the park she used to play in when she was a toddler. There was a small playground there and many lovely nature walks.

It was a chilly morning so there weren’t any other children or dog walkers around. Bella and Buttons had lots of fun on the roundabout while Bella’s mum was enjoying her coffee in a flask. Then they played tag in the big open field. The two friends had lots of energy and didn’t want to stop even for a minute.

‘I must show you my special tree, Buttons!’ cried Bella and lead her friend down the hill towards a small meadow.

‘There it is!’ Bella pointed at a large dry bush; its branches trimmed low in a way to form a small podium. She climbed on and waved to her mum and Buttons.

‘Wow Bella, this is very cool!’ Buttons jumped next to Bella and her mum tried to take a photo of the two of them, which was tricky as they kept moving and making funny faces.

‘You two are full of beans today,’ protested Bella’s mum. ‘Could you stop and pose for a second, please?’

‘We’re just having so much fun, Mummy!’ said Bella with a happy smile. ‘I’m starting to feel a bit hungry though.’

‘If you sit down for five minutes, I’ll give you a nice snack,’ promised her mum and opened her backpack.

‘Yay!’ this time they listened, jumped off their little stage and sat down on the grass. Bella’s mum gave them some dried fruit and seeds and they happily ate in silence.

Unfortunately, this didn’t last long as all of a sudden, Bella dropped her snack and jumped up with a shriek.

‘Bella!’ exclaimed her mum with frustration. ‘Honestly, it’s like you have ants in your pants!’

‘I do! I really do, Mummy!’ cried Bella desperately trying to shake the insects out of her leggings. She hadn’t noticed that she’d been sitting down next to a large ants nest.

Bella’s mum tried to help her daughter but couldn’t stop chuckling, while Buttons was rolling around with laughter. Thankfully, it was just a few ants and they managed to get them out quickly, but poor Bella couldn’t stop scratching her bum.
