Start to talk about escape options they can use to get away from risky situations. I have told my children that one of the most important things I do for my sobriety is give myself permission to leave a place where I don’t feel safe, even if I’m worried I might offend someone or make them angry. I can always apologize and explain after, but I have never had a friend get mad at me when I explained that I left because I did not feel safe. Real friends want us to be safe and healthy, after all.

Early elementary school is the perfect time to start talking about what makes for healthy and unhealthy peer relationships. I will go into much greater detail in chapter 8, but begin by asking your child what it is about their relationships that makes them happy. If a relationship seems to be making your child anxious or sad, say, “You know, I notice when you come home from Amy’s house you feel sad. Do you know why that is?”

Model and talk about your own positive relationships. For example, you can talk about how your friendship with Kevin makes you feel confident and happy, and how you decided not to be friends with Ivan anymore because he made you feel uncomfortable and sad.
