He sent off pictures of the sword to Rose, packed his bags, and walked out to his car. Rose Leroux had the bait. Now he needed Harry Fox to take it. Stefan would be waiting if he did.

Chapter 15

Luxor

Sara floated on air, suspended in a darkness so absolute she couldn’t see her hands or feet. She heard nothing at all and had no feeling as she lay with arms out and legs together. It was like floating in the depths of the ocean, far below the surface, no light or noise to disturb her, all weight gone and no power to move. She gritted her teeth, blinked against the dark, and then the world came rushing back.

Light assaulted her eyes as they cracked open. She tried to raise a hand against it but found her arms wouldn’t move. A shadow filled her vision. A shadow in the form of a person.

“Do not move.”

A man’s voice, harsh and close. She struggled, twisting to gain her freedom, pushing against whatever bound her arms against her sides. Hot pain erupted in her ankle and Sara cried out.

“Stop moving.” Strong hands took hold of her. Strong, but gentle. “You hit your head. Try not to move.”

I know that voice. A name rushed out of the depths of her memory. “Omar,” she said.

“Yes.”

The strong hands let her go, and Sara’s vision slowly cleared, her pupils constricting until Omar’s face came into view. He reached out and touched a tender spot on her head. “Does your head hurt?” he asked. “You hit the statue when you fell.”

Luxor. Ramses II. Her ascent on the ancient statue came rushing back. Along with the terrifying feeling of slipping during her descent and plunging to the ground. Rough, powerful hands had grabbed her. The temple guards? “What happened?”

“You fell,” Omar said again. “I distracted the guards, as you asked, when they were about to turn the light back on. I saw you fall right at that moment.”

The strong hands. Not guards. Omar. “You tried to catch me,” she said.

“Yes. I carried you away. No one noticed.” He pointed beside her. “I have your equipment.”

For the first time she realized the softness beneath her was a cot. Her night-vision equipment was on the table beside her. “The guards didn’t see me?”

“I brought you to my store,” he said. “This is a room I do not tell people about. You are safe here.”

Her ankle barked and she winced. “I twisted my ankle.”

“Let me see it.” She started to sit up and her head spun. “Slowly,” Omar said.

Her headache was already subsiding. She sat up, blinking to clear away the dark spots that flashed in her vision. A few deep breaths and the wooziness faded. “I didn’t hit it very hard,” she said, probing the tender area. “It’s sore. Not bleeding.”

“That is good.” Omar lifted the sheet that had covered her, which Sara had thought were bindings. “May I touch your ankle?”

Her shoes were still on. Sara pulled her pant leg up to reveal the first hints of purple already forming along the bottom of her leg.
