Together Again For The First Time

Frank St. Cloud could almost taste the power as he listened to Lawson recite the contents of the late Dr. Kessler’s notebooks.

Many of the confessions recorded in the books had been banal, the crimes petty. But, now and then a tidbit would emerge that was pure gold, such as the name of the sitting senator who had confessed to murdering his mistress with a hammer.

Lawson had been talking for hours in a dull monotone. St. Cloud had tried to get him to skip to the good parts, but that resulted in Lawson reminiscing once again about the girl name Holly. A part of St. Cloud wondered what had become of the girl. Lawson had obviously loved her a great deal. Maybe he’d quench his curiosity before he killed Lawson.

When Lawson emerged from his trance again, St. Cloud noticed that he was still in a bit of a stupor. As much as he wanted to give the man more of the drug and continue letting him spill what was in the notebooks, he knew it was wiser to let him rest a bit. If he gave Lawson too much in too short a time he might get no more out of him.

St. Cloud also needed rest, and several cups of coffee. It was going to be a long night.

As he emerged from the room where he’d been questioning Lawson, St. Cloud saw Jack Moxon pacing in the hallway.

St. Cloud sighed. There was another damn problem.

Walking up to Moxon, St. Cloud greeted him with a question.

“What’s wrong now?”

Moxon pinched the area between his eyes as he spoke.

“I sent three men to grab up Heather Rodgers’ sister, to see if she knew how to find Rodgers.”

“Good thinking, what happened?”

“Two are dead and one is wounded. Worse yet, I’ve no idea who did it.”

“What do you mean? It must have been a cop or a Fed.”

“No, it was neither, and that P.I. Jake Caliber has gotten involved. That bastard killed several of my men at Pantheon headquarters.”

“Was it the old man or the grandson?”

“The grandson, but he’s as tough as old man Caliber.”

“Moxon, this operation has been going downhill since it started. We have to assume that the authorities have my name. Despite that, everything is good, because I’m getting what I need from Lawson. Another session or two and I’ll know everything he knows.”

Moxon smiled. “I’m glad to hear that, and don’t worry, I’ve got men out scouting a new location.”

“Why would we need a new location?”

“As a precaution. If they know your name they might track you down here.”

“Doubtful, I bought this house under a different identity.”

“And no one you know has ever been here?”

“Heather Rodgers was here once. It’s why I wanted her killed.”

“If she’s found, she’ll talk. I’ll tell my men to get ready to move as soon as we find a place to go.”

“Do that, and Moxon, make it soon. I want to be out of here by morning.”

“As soon as I hear back from my man Garrett, I’ll let you know what he found.
