Mortal Kombat
Arena Entertainment - 1993
Everybody who was around during the early nineties knows the history of the Midway arcade game Mortal Kombat, and how this fighting title caused so much controversy with its gory finishing moves. But how well did this star of the art coin-op convert across to the humble Sega 8-bit handheld? Well, not very well in all honesty, but I guess that’s to be expected. Let’s start with the graphics, obviously the humble 8-bit Game Gear can’t hope to compete with the arcade machine’s high quality digitisation, so it’s not a particularly pretty game. They get points for trying but the poorly animated sprites flicker all over the place. Moving on then, the sound is ok actually, with some nice background music and adequate sound effects. They also had to cut corners with the gameplay too as you can only access five of the characters from the arcade version and only two of the play arenas. Both Kano and the secret character Reptile have been omitted. They have also had to simplify the move sets too, so expect to find some of your favourite fatalities missing. Like many other versions, a cheat is also needed to activate the full-on blood mode. Gameplay is jerky, unresponsive at times and just feels very lacking. Although just about playable, Mortal Kombat seems to have been mortally wounded in this port and trying to do this title justice on the Game Gear really was a step too far. This version of Mortal Kombat should be annihilated and is definitely one to avoid!
