âReggie, Iâm looking at the numbers right in front of me and itâs not going to work. Weâre already 12% over budget, and the investors are not going to approve another $600,000. Theyâre just not. No, I canât take it to them! Theyâll laugh in my face.â
Jack rolls his eyes and mouths Iâm sorry to me across the aisle of the private jet. I smile and wave away his concern as I go back to my laptop, pretending to focus, but I canât. My stomach has been in knots since my fight with Trent yesterday, and honestly, now that I think about it, it started feeling that way even a few days before that.
I grab my coffee from my cup holder and bring it to my lips, but the smell makes my stomach roll. I place it back down and grab my water instead. The alarm on my phone chirps, reminding me to take my birth control pill, so I dig around in my purse until I find the pack and stuff it into my pocket.
âYou okay?â I hear Jack whisper, and I look over at him to find a concerned look on his face as he holds his phone away from his ear for a second.
âYeah,â I say, standing up and pointing toward the restroom, âjust going to use the facilities.â
I walk to the back of the plane and duck into the restroom, leaning against the sink to steady myself. I feel so out of sortsâespecially given the confusion Iâve allowed to creep in regarding Trent, talking with my CFO about a potential mystery buyer for the winery even though I havenât been actively looking or mentioned it to anyone other than my family, and now rushing off to California, my head is swimming. I didnât even have the energy to book a hotel for this trip, so Iâll be sleeping on the couch in my old office.
I flip open my pill packet and absentmindedly press the clear bubble to release the pill . . . when I realize itâs the fifth placebo pill. I stare at the packet again. There are only two remaining placebo pills left in the packet and I havenât started my period.
âWait,â I say to myself as I open my period tracker app on my phone. Sure enough, it says my period is five days late. But that canât be right since my cycle is every 28 days like clockwork.
I manually count backward from my last period, then count the pills. It adds up. I clearly havenât missed a pill, so why am I so late?
It feels like all the symptoms are there: Iâm bloated, Iâve had the threat of a migraine almost daily, and my breasts feel full and painful.
âItâs probably just stress,â I say to myself as I slide the empty pill packet into my pocket and walk back to my seat.
Jack is off the phone and apologizes once again for the constant negotiations. I remind him that itâs not a big deal.
