Chapter 9

When Maggie awoke, the sun was already good and up, and the street noises told her that the day had fairly begun. Bathing in the cold water still in her pitcher brought her fully awake, and only then did she stop to consider her best course of action. Should she confront Jack, demand to know who this woman was and what she wanted? Should she insist that he send her away? Maggie decided that such a demand would be foolish. It might make him think she was jealous, and then there was always the possibility that he would refuse. Then what would she do?

After careful consideration, Maggie decided to wait, to see what would happen. If the woman disappeared, then she would know that Jack had sent her away. If the woman stayed, then it would only be a short time until public outrage would bring the situation to Maggie’s attention, and she could then insist that he get rid of her, strictly for appearances. With that settled, Maggie tried not to notice the hollow feeling in her stomach, blaming it on hunger.

She dressed once again in her green dress, perversely wanting to look her best once more. If she had to come face to face with that woman, as she very well might, considering the size of the town, then she would need every bit of confidence she could muster. This time she put her hair up, pinning it into a very proper chignon in hopes that that would make her look older and more sophisticated. Still, she frowned back at her reflection in the poor mirror. Compared to the person she had seen at the stage last night, she still looked like a schoolgirl playing at being grown up. She could not know how appealing that combination was.

Now, where would Jack be? she asked herself. He would either be still in his room or already in the dining room or... Maggie did not let herself think where else he might be, but there was always the possibility that when he had come back the previous night he had wanted some female companionship, and God knew, he hadn’t come to her room. Screwing up her courage, she opened her door and marched across the hall, hesitating only a second before knocking authoritatively.

She heard a slight scuffling sound, and she knew a moment of relief that he was, indeed, inside, but only a moment. What if he were not alone?

“Who is it?” he growled irritably through the door. Maggie stifled a sudden urge to reply, “Your wife,” and said instead, “It’s Maggie.”

Instantly the door flew open and Jack was there, filling the doorway, his dark eyes narrowed in concern. “Maggie!” he said, taking her in from head to foot in one swift glance and then darting a quick look up and down the hallway. “Is anything wrong?”

Something was very wrong, and Maggie found that she suddenly did not have the breath to reply. It was silly, she knew. She had seen him without a shirt before.
