Thirteen

The proposed departure time of seven a.m. on Tuesday hadn’t worked as well as Jenn had hoped. Because of some last-minute issues that had to be dealt with before vacating their home for a couple of months and a couple of pressing issues at the office, it had been well after three in the afternoon before they’d gotten on the road. Jenn had insisted on taking her Toyota Land Cruiser, leaving Chloe bummed to part with her beloved Bronco. But one of the last-minute details Jenn had to handled was making arrangements to have Chloe’s Bronco shipped to Texas as a surprise for her upcoming birthday. Even thought she’d already given Chloe the Bronco, it was still the big present for her sixteenth birthday. If everything went as planned, the truck should arrive in Texas before the big event.

However, the late start had meant stopping at midnight to sleep. Chloe had offered to drive, but Jenn had been exhausted, and while her daughter had driven herself to Texas, Jenn knew she’d be more relaxed if she were awake while Chloe drove.

Getting Chloe to sleep the previous evening had been like trying to put a rambunctious toddler to bed. Her daughter had been too excited to sleep. Plus, Jenn had suspected her mind was running at full steam about what would happen in Texas and how Marc would treat her. The hotel room was finally quiet by one. However, at five, Chloe had woken up and shoved a cup of mediocre coffee under Jenn’s nose to get her up and going.

Chloe drove the first leg since she—Jenn—hadn’t been fully awake, and Chloe appeared to be on a stimulant—she wasn’t, but still, she’d been raring to go.

Jenn’s original travel plan had included stopping outside of Dallas, grabbing a hotel, and getting a good night’s sleep, followed by a morning shower and makeup. Vanity wasn’t her issue, but she didn’t want to show up at Marc’s house looking like an unkept bag lady. However, her daughter wouldn’t even consider stopping. No delay was acceptable to her. Full speed ahead seemed to be Chloe’s motto.

So, here she sat in Marc’s drive, hair limp, no makeup, and breath similar to a garage on a hot day as her daughter sprinted to the door. Oh, to have that confidence and energy.

Marc greeted Chloe with a surprised expression, then pulled her in for a hug.

Since hiding in her SUV wasn’t an option, Jenn slid from the driver’s seat and waved. “We’re early,” she called to Marc. “Sorry.”

“I’m not. Come on in. Leave your luggage. I’ll get it in a minute.”

She pushed her long hair over her shoulders, worked up a smile, and headed up the sidewalk to where Marc waited on his porch, and damn him, he looked good. His shirt was wrinkled, and his hair tousled, but he still looked better than most men who spent time primping. Her heart thumped loudly in her ears while butterflies danced in her belly to the drum beat.

“Welcome to Casa de Singer.
