TWENTY-FOUR
âThere you are,â Doc said, looking up at Rake as he entered their geodesic dome tent. âIâm ready for our little safari.â She brushed her hair behind her ears and reached for her tote bag.
âWe can do that later. Itâs the dawn of a new era, Doc. You know what that means? It means thereâs just as much darkness as there is light, all mixed together. Whatâs say we take a closer look at the sun peeking over the horizon? Put some of that darkness behind us for now.â He squeezed her at the shoulders, brought her closer and kissed her on the forehead.
She looked up at him with a scowl on her face. âTranslation: Rake and Declan have been unduly successful with their weather wars and their designer plagues. So successful he needs me to be in the proper frame of mind before he shows me the results, before I go having second thoughts about everything weâre doing.â
Rake sighed. âSomething like that.â
She pushed him away. âSorry, not interested in playing that game.â
âFine. I have another one for you. Itâs called Rake and Doc build a well-rounded life thatâs a lot more than mere martyring of themselves for others. Itâs a life filled with love, laughter, and a knowledge that those who work hard should damn well play hard. Best of all,â he said grabbing her bag, âyouâre already packed.â
âOh yeah?â she said, smiling. âJust what did you have in mind?â
âYou leave that to me.â
âI suppose I am in desperate need of rescuing from all my seriousness.â
âWe both are.â He threw his arm around her shoulder and herded her out of the dome.
Once they were in the jeep, he said, âKnow the perfect place for a picnic.â He fired up the engine.
âBut we havenât packed a picnic basket!â
âIâm not too worried, Doc,â he said, backing up the jeep before putting it in drive. âThanks to this edible landscape your people built, you canât take a step without getting hit in the head by a falling coconut or slipping on an overripe banana.
She smiled. âI suppose thatâs some proof I do worry unnecessarily.â
âAh, so thatâs what they mean by enlightenment. You just get lighter by letting go of all those worries.â
She shot him a mock scowl before returning her eyes to the vista, relaxing into the wind against her face courtesy of the convertible jeep.
He took them up a twisting dirt road. After the potholes and âpebblesâ the size of grapefruit were finished bouncing them about in the front seats, and just in time for a chiropractor, the path ultimately dead ended. The trail had only grown narrower the last half mile, and now the makeshift jungle created by the chipheads felt like it was closing in on her. âI thought we were looking to broaden our horizons. A person could get positively claustrophobic in here,â she remarked, trying to push the branches out of her face.
âYe of little faith,â he said, lifting her out of the jeep.
âWhat are you doing?â
âI believe itâs customary to carry the bride across the threshold.
