Arthur

Arthur sat at the desk in his office. His leg was bouncing at the speed of light, one hand tapping voraciously on his desk, the other was at his mouth, nails in between his teeth, shredding what was left of the tough keratin. He hadn’t bitten his nails in years, and he knew that meant his anxiety was through the roof.

He opened his drawer, pulled out his bottle of Xanax, and poured one pill into his palm. He popped it in his mouth and swallowed it down without water. He stood up and then sat back down. Then he stood up, took a deep breath, and sat back down again.

He’d received a phone call informing him that the people in his records room weren’t with NexGen. That Brahim Awan had been taken by them and that they were accessing DNA Global’s records for their own nefarious reasons. Arthur said that he was calling the police, but NexGen had said that they were prepared for this and to let them handle it.

But Arthur had let them handle things before, and they had been ready to throw him under the bus.

He spit out the piece of nail that he’d managed to rip from his thumb. Then with shaking hands, he picked up the phone.

“This is nine-one-one, what’s your emergency?”

Arthur cleared his throat and began to talk.
