Alice felt every jolt and every twitch as she rode before Wolf. Nicholas was at her side, silent, somber, and shocked.
Lilly had healed her, and he had witnessed that. How did they explain it to him? Would he be repulsed and turn from them with the realization of what they could do?
Dev had Lilly before him, in his arms, and her eyes were closed as she slept. Exhausted from the healing.
âIâm sorry.â
âWhy did you take the opposite route to everyone else, Alice?â Wolf questioned her.
She had no answer to that, so she simply apologized once more.
âShe cannot be blamed for the bird flying in front of her horse, Wolf.â Her guilt increased as Nicholas defended her.
What had gone through his head when heâd found her lying unconscious on the ground? Heâd yelled at her to stop; sheâd ignored him. Then heâd roared that there was danger. Had he not done so, the damage to her could have been irreparable. She had hurt him too. The guilt intensified.
âBut the point is, she was where she should not have been yet again. I went one way, so she went the other. It was reckless and irresponsible.â
She let Wolf say what he needed to. Understood his words were motivated by worry.
âYou say to me constantly you are the steady one of the three of us. Lately, I would dispute that fact.â
âShe is hurting, Wolf. Enough now.â
Her brotherâs mouth formed a thin, angry line at Nicholasâs words but he said nothing further, which she was grateful for.
Guilt settled its heavy weight like a cloak around her shoulders.
She looked at Nicholas, watched him flinch as he rotated his shoulder.
âAre you hurt, Nicholas?â
âWhat... pardon?â His eyes found hers.
âWere you not thrown from your horse?â
âAre you hurt, cousin?â
âI am well.â
âYet the pallor in your cheeks and those clipped words would suggest otherwise,â James persisted.
Dev slowed his horse to draw alongside Nicholas. His eyes flashed green. âYour color is also weaker. Where is your pain?â
âI am well, donât fuss. I have just aggravated my shoulder slightly.â
Alice saw a carriage up ahead, and beside it stood Essie.
âI had felt you needed me, so sent the others on.â
âWe do. Alice had a fall. Lilly healed her,â Dev said.
âGet them inside,â Essie ordered. âI have some food from the picnic, and blankets.â
âNicholas is injured, Essie. But he wonât tell us where,â James said, dismounting.
âI am not badly hurt,â he protested.
Alice was lowered into Maxâs arms and placed inside the carriage. She bit back the moan as he put her onto the seat and the pains in her body intensified. Dev helped Lilly inside. He pulled out a blanket and tucked it around her.
âHere.â Essie thrust him a bundle wrapped in a napkin and a flask.
He opened it and handed Lilly two sandwiches.
âEat it, love, and then sip the brandy.â
Lilly nodded, but didnât speak. Exhaustion radiated off her.
I did this to her.
Devâs love was there in the way he smoothed Lillyâs hair off her face and kissed her cheek. Each gesture increased her guilt.
