“Sit down, bruh,” said Ian, grabbing Darwin’s arm. “Right now, the advantage’s shifted. He doesn’t know that you know. Keep it that way.”

Darwin ground his teeth and breathed heavily through his nose. Fucking Jacques. He pressed his fists into his thighs, imagining them pummeling Jacques. He stopped when his leg muscles protested in pain.

“Is this the guy?”

Ian showed Darwin a picture of Jacques on his mobile that an employee had taken a few minutes before when he drove by the restaurant.

“Yeah, that’s the guy from Paris.”

“I remember seeing him last night, thinking he took too much interest in our table. At first, I thought it was Eyrún and Katie, but then your driver reported being followed to the office this morning. My roundabout drive to the restaurant allowed me to confirm the tail. What’s he want?” said Ian.

“The scroll, but how does he know about it?”

“Maybe he doesn’t. You said he lost the trail of the Templar’s treasure. He’s probably following you, hoping you lead him to it.”

Darwin told Ian he just wanted to look and walked to a restaurant front window. Standing behind a plant, he could just make out Jacques sitting on a bench about thirty meters away. His blond hair fell under a ball cap.

“How the hell did he follow us?” asked Darwin back at the table with Ian.

“You’re a decent man, Darwin, but Eyrún was right in Iceland. You need to trust people less. Gold has a way of luring treasure hunters—dangerous treasure hunters.”

“We can lose him on the way back to Paris,” said Darwin.

“That’s what I mean,” said Ian. “You didn’t even know he followed you here. Don’t put yourself and Eyrún in danger. I have a better idea.”

A half hour later, Ian dropped Darwin at the hotel, and they embraced. Ian said he was serious about them coming back. “The gals get along. Eyrún said she wanted to see lions in the wild. I’ve got connections. You take care,” he said, then added, “I’m going to have two of my guys shadow you until your flight. You’ll only see them if this guy, Jacques, causes trouble. You stay cool and don’t provoke him.”

They embraced again, and Ian drove away. Darwin waited a few minutes inside the lobby, but in a place where he could see a car stopped a little way from the entry. Its passenger, Jacques, exited.

“Bastard,” Darwin muttered, turned, and carried the tube back to his room.
