The next morning, Michel fails to show up for work and she decides it’s her last morning in London. She has got to leave if she’s ever going to get a decent night’s sleep. Mr. Singh, receiving the news of her departure, redoubles his efforts to slip her fawning looks as she tries to force down another inedible breakfast of burnt toast and black tea. Mr. Singh’s dark eyes glitter from deep within the folds of his cheeks and he bends close to refill her tea cup after every other sip, then draws back like a cobra, leaving behind a confusing whiff of cheap cologne and curry powder.

Chewing on a piece of toast, she wonders what has become of the silent Michel. She longs to see him again, to explain why she could not give in to his desire or her own.

“Such a marvelously historic city,” she hears Mr. Singh say. She has learned to filter out most of his innuendos. “It deserves more careful scrutiny than you Americans have time for.”
