A premonition came over Zohra in the evening.

She sat up abruptly and went out of their room.

Leila followed her curiously to Jaffari's office which was nothing more than a small, cramped room stuffed with medical equipment and in one corner was a table on which was a computer.

'Khaleh,' the research student asked, 'what happens if the police raid this place?'

The gynecologist removed her reading glasses and rubbed her eyes. 'That hasn't happened before. I have well-placed contacts in the police, Ershad and Sepah. I know several high-ranking politicians as well. They have always warned me of a raid. We have gotten enough notice to move the women out to one of the hospitals I consult at. The staff here are very good at folding the beds and putting them in a nearby warehouse. The police, when they come, find only the pharmacy and my office where I do private consultations which is legal. Why do you ask?'

'Clean up,' Zohra urged. 'Right away. I have a bad feeling.'

Her aunt looked at her for a long time while the clinic went about its business. Someone laughed outside in the hallway. A pan clattered somewhere.

‘You have felt this before?’

‘On a few occasions. It feels like … I can’t describe it … it’s as if I feel I should run away. Whenever I felt like this, something bad happened. If I had paid attention to my instincts, I could have saved myself from getting into trouble.’

'Bad feeling?' Leila echoed. 'I don't understand.'

'I do,' Jaffari said softly. 'Your sister was known for her feelings. They were like a sixth sense, warning of danger. She stopped your father several times from going out and on each occasion, something bad had happened. A bridge collapsed on the route he would have taken, or some other disaster had occurred. Dokhtar-e-man, when any woman in your family gets these feelings, I take them very seriously. Besides,' she got to her feet and rang a bell, 'we have a quiet night. We don't have many patients.'

'Neda, Sahar,' she told her assistants when they arrived. 'Evacuate immediately.'
