Soon they were back in Zach’s SUV. His driving was slightly tamer, but he was talking business with someone on the phone through his AirPods, which were stuffed in his ears. Elaine rested her head against the seat. It hit her yet again that she and Zach had banged! Or was it banging? Even though what they had done was so spontaneous, she had never felt so close to a man. What did that mean? Perhaps she should view their involvement as a no-strings-attached fling. That way, when he eventually broke her heart, it wouldn’t hurt so much.

“Hey, are you okay?” he asked.

She rolled her head in his direction to face him. “I am,” she said with a satisfied smile. And to her surprise, she really was.

He studied her carefully then put his focus back on the road. “I have a few more loose ends to tie up, then I’m all yours.”

Another call rang on the console. They both looked as the name Mike Falk lit up on the screen.

Zach quickly declined Mike’s call and placed another one. Elaine went rigid. It was as though her brain had just gotten a sharp dose of reality. She stared out the window and distractedly watched as he made a turn down a busy street then zoomed down another. Elaine didn’t know much about New York City neighborhoods, but she did know they were in Tribeca. They were speeding down a narrow alley until Zach stopped in front of a garage door. It opened, and he drove in, but he hadn’t arrived at their destination yet. What he’d entered was merely a lift. Up they went, and when they stopped, his vehicle was parked in a pristine garage.

He said goodbye to Tobey Frey, the guy whose name was on the console, then looked at her as though he was hungry for more of what they had done earlier. “I want to invite you in, but we would never make it out if I did.”

Elaine swallowed the lump in her throat. “That’s okay,” she croaked. She cleared her throat again. “Your place looks nice.”

His flirtatious smile mirrored hers. “Thanks,” he said.

“But you better be careful because you’re wearing your bank account on your sleeve.”

“Thanks for warning me.”

They chuckled until their locked gazes smoldered.

Elaine cleared her throat, refusing to look away. “So what’s next?”

His face leaned toward hers. “Let’s get the hell out of here before I toss my plans to show you the city.”

Elaine was close to admitting that she didn’t want to see any more of New York City than she already had. She’d rather spend the rest of their day together in bed since she’d already elected to throw caution to the wind. She’d seen many facets of Zach that turned her on like never before. She craved more, and perhaps whatever awaited them beyond the bed would satiate that yearning.

“So how are we getting around town if you’re parking our chariot?”

His eyes danced. “Walk some, cab some, and then see what happens next.
