“Don’t be ridiculous,” she said, coming off the bed like she’d been shot out of a cannon.

“Yeah, this isn’t exactly the way I saw myself getting married, either,” he replied with a shrug. He straightened. “Under the circumstances, I think you’d better plan to go back home today, after all. I’m sure there’s all kinds of plans to be discussed with your family.” He opened the door. “Oh, before you leave, would you mind fixin’ us some breakfast, sugar?”

He closed the door before the shoe she’d picked up could connect with his head. He heard it bounce off the door. Yep, she had a temper. He was sort of looking forward to the taming of Shannon.

When he walked back into the kitchen, Buddy eyed him suspiciously. “That took you long enough.”

“I’m not real sure how to break the news to you, my friend, but Shannon is not taking our newly engaged status real well. It looks like I’m going to be feeding us if we plan to eat.”

“You know how to cook?” Buddy asked hopefully.

“I can fry bacon and make toast. The eggs might be a problem. Maybe scrambled will work.”

“Sounds good to me. So what’s been happening with you since the last time I saw you?”

* * *

What was it with those two? Shannon wondered, throwing her clothes into her bag. Or was it men in general? Did they actually expect her to marry Dan just because—she paused and looked around. Why would Dan take Buddy’s threats seriously, anyway? He knew very well that nothing had happened between them.

It was obvious that she would have to have a long talk with her grandmother as soon as possible. At least she could have a rational conversation with her.

Shannon had no intention of getting married any time soon...and when she did decide to marry, she would certainly have a choice about who the bridegroom would be.

It would not be Dan Crenshaw.

That was when her conscience decided to show up to discuss the matter. Just what she needed.

You were willing to make love with him but you won’t marry him? Care to explain that one to me?

“I was carried away by the moment, that’s all. Once I had the opportunity to think about it, I knew that Dan and I would never work as a couple.”

Oh, you did. And when did you discover this new information?

“It was a childish crush, that’s all it was. His eyes enamored me. Very few people have those dark blue—almost pansy-colored—eyes.”

Honey, there’s nothing pansylike about that man and you know it.

“Cute. Real cute. The point is that Dan and I don’t love each other. I’ve always known that I would not marry until I knew beyond any doubt that I loved a man and that he loved and was devoted to me.”

Well, give him a chance. Wasn’t that what you wanted when you came looking for him? Didn’t he mention that he wanted to spend more time with you? You came down here hoping for a chance
