Chapter 13

Rose

My eyes fluttered open as I blinked, trying to push away the remnants of sleep, as I was still pretty sleepy. The string of morning light that filtered through the curtains cast a bright glow on the room, making it impossible for me to open my eyes and adjust to the sunlight. I made a sound and tried to turn away from the light, but someone held me in place. The warmth that enveloped me was comforting. I turned toward the person holding me and nearly gasped out loud. I clasped my hand around my mouth to stop from making noise.

Isaac was in bed with me, spooning me from behind. Memories from last night filled my mind—Isaac and I had sex again. The last time we had sex, he’d acted as if nothing of that sort had ever happened between us. It was a one-night stand, but I didn’t think I’d meet him a few hours later and he’d end up being my boss.

Would he deny this, too, and say it didn’t happen? How come he was still in bed with me? Yesterday, his breakdown had been unexpected. I’d been so surprised to see him like that, torn and in pain. But I’d ended up seeing a different side of him. The side he kept hidden from the world.

Isaac moved against me, and a shiver ran down my spine. I attempted to move his arm and leave, but he was still fast asleep and spooning me in a comforting, intimate way. How was I supposed to break this contract? I was getting those butterflies again. One part of my brain, the logical part, told me to break our contact and maintain the boundaries we’d put in place. Yet something held me in there. I couldn’t just leave, no matter how much I wanted to.

Isaac pulled me closer, wrapping his arms around me tightly. How was I supposed to stop such tenderness? It was impossible. Isaac groaned, and then his eyes slowly fluttered open. Our gaze met, and I could have sworn I’d never seen such tenderness in Isaac’s eyes.

He pulled his arms away, and I thought he’d get out of bed and walk off. Instead, he pressed a soft kiss to my forehead. I shuddered, looking up at him, surprised. Isaac had never done something like that before.

“Good morning, Rose,” he said, still staring at me.

I almost choked as I said, “Good morning, Isaac.”

The boundaries between reality and our contract were becoming blurry for both of us now. I swallowed hard as I looked at Isaac. Something was different about him.

“Are you okay?” I asked him.

“Yeah. I am,” he responded, smiling at me.

Isaac never smiled with so much warmth. He only smiled at his grandmother, and yet, here he was, smiling at me. This was so unexpected. I wasn’t sure what to make of it.

We stayed quiet for a while. I wondered what he would say to me. He brought his hand to my face and pushed a lock of hair behind my ear.
